Polding Tennis: Great to see Holy Family having players travel to Dubbo last week for the Wilcannia-Forbes Diocese Tennis trials. Mitchell Arndell, Patrick Simpson and Lucy Chapman all competed hard with Mitch and Lucy selected to go on to the Polding trials which will be held in Lismore in February. Last week Round 5 of junior comp was played in warm steamy conditions.

Some of the results included: Red Aces- Jordan Mann had a close 3/2 win over Sienna Hunt while Charlotte Wilson continued her good form scoring all five games played against Katie Forbes. After an afternoon of match practise at Bokeyar Cups, Knox Lamont came out firing and served with much more confidence in his match against Savannah Latu. Knox was all smiles with his 4/1 win. Anna Davis also played a nice match last week after her extra practise and did well to defeat Toby Swain 4/1.
Orange Federers: Sam Westcott hit some beaut forehands in his match against Jack Greenland last week. It finished 3/2 in favour of Sam. Liliani Latu is full of confidence and was too good for Ruby Coote last week winning all six games played. Elena Glastonbury defeated Declan Quade in a rippa match 4/2.
Orange Nadals: Jacques van Wyk defeated Patrick McPherson 3/1 while Riley Jones reported back he had his strokes firing against Tarlei Glastonbury when he won 5/2. Phoebe Forbes is having another great term at tennis and scored a 5/0 win over Mitchell Boggs but there were plenty of good rallies in their match.
Green Smashes: Lucy Hall always plays a nice steady game and last week she scored a close 4/2 win over Mitch Wirth. Max Coote and Kelsey Mann were seen playing a nice match with both players improving their serving this term. Their match ended in a three all draw. Sam Riley and Patrick Simpson did well in their match where Sam just won on the whistle 3/2.
Green Volleys: Ella McColl is hitting her strokes well with some extra practise and she accounted for Ruby Wilson 7/1. Ruby then backed up and played Poppy Fisher in a rippa match with both players hitting some sizzling groundstrokes. Ruby just won 5/3.
Singles and Doubles Division: Archie Rix and Cody Morgan didn’t take any lip from little brother Will and partner Nick McPherson last week when they blasted through the three sets. Lily McCormick and Zoe Anderson had a close match with Faith Clarke and Tia Dunn. Zoe and Tia’s singles went to a tiebreaker while the doubles also went in favour of Lily and Zoe 6/4. Nia Boggs and Hayden Arndell are surely the team to beat this term. They had another three sets to zero win over Lachie Unger and Tyson Lennox. Ethan Hunt and Nick Gascoigne were on a mission last week when they played Xander MacGregor and Sam Rivett. The three sets were played in seemingly record time with Ethan and Nick showing some promising consistency.
Club Championships: Ben Evans, 16, secured his first of no doubt many A grade singles titles when he defeated Julian Fyfe in the final of the men’s event. Ben has made significant improvement which has been a credit to his commitment and he thoroughly deserved his win. Julian didn’t play poorly but he couldn’t find any dents in the Evans forehand and big serve.
NSW Clean TeQ manager James Fisher was the defending champion in the B grade Men’s singles and he backed up to take his second title. Gabe Goodrick, Brendon Hunt and Ethan Hunt rounded out the field and James was made to work hard and cover plenty of ground in all three matches. The match of the day was definitely between Brendon Hunt and Gabe Goodrick. They were on court for more than an hour with Gabe finally getting the job done 7/5 in the tiebreaker.
Molly Kennedy delivered with a commanding win over Lily McCormick to take out the B grade ladies title. Molly has qualified for the State Finals and this was a good match. Lily is playing some steady tennis and rose to the occasion making Molly work hard for her win.
It was 1981 when Helen Magill first won the A grade Ladies singles. She was just 13 years old and defeated Janet Cheney (sadly not with us anymore) 6/1, 1/6, 6/1. 38 years on and there’s another one in the bag. Abbey Kennedy and Maddy McCormick finished first and second in the Central West Champion of Champions last month and are off to the NSW State Finals next weekend but on Sunday they didn’t have the consistency needed to accumulate enough points to win back-to-back games and put pressure on Magill. While Helen Magill said she was disappointed with her own form due to a total lack of match practise, she said it was more about actually winning points and making it as difficult as possible for the teenagers who enjoy rallying with plenty of pace. Abbey pushed hard to finish runner-up. December 9 will be the Men’s and Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
