The Night Comp continued last week in steamy conditions with the night skies threatening. Matches were once again played in good spirit and the Davis Cup boys seem to be inspired in their updated kit and their form matched their appearance last week. Max Keith self assessed his early season results as ‘over performing’ but alas he was bumped up to the Line 1 for last weeks encounter against TopShelf. The experienced Drew Hayne didn’t hold back with his blistering serves and forehands and Max was seen scurrying around the court in an attempt to stay in the rallies. Scott Knights and Gary Morgan had a rippa singles and the competitive nature of the ‘old fox’ ran through the veins and Gaz wasn’t prepared to give an inch to the young thoroughbred. Needless to say it was reported Gary took the 4-wheeler on route to all parts of the farm for the next couple of days to give the legs a rest. Scotty won the battle 6/5.
Kurt Matthews meanwhile was more nonchalant in his victory over Ang Porter who is enjoying her return to the court this comp.
Final Result- Davis Cup 4. Top Shelf 2.
Bogan Gate Bandits rallied well in their match against Arndells Aces. The only win for Arndells Team was captain Angus who had a tough match against Phil Dunford. With an oversupply of testosterone and strategic skill on display, this match was worthy of a show court match up instead of the back blocks. Angus eventually scored a 6/4 win and one thinks both these stalwarts were a little worse for wear in the ensuing day or so. BG Bandits Andrew McPherson and Ben Rix reportedly carried Phil to their five sets to one victory.
The Questionables had the services of Jason McKinnon when they took on Mixed Lollies who only had regular Stacey Townsend on court while Luke Nash and Phil Kirk subbed in.
The Questionables scored a five sets to one win but the most competitive set was when husband and wife Phil and Sheridan Kirk were on opposite sides of the net. Jason partnered Sheridan and was determined to give Sheridan her first ever win at tennis against Phil. Stacey and Sheridan were having a nice time rallying but Jason and Phil were ‘busting their boilers’ for every point. It was eventually a win to Jason and Sheridan 6/5 and bragging rights in the Kirk household for days if not weeks and months.
Regional Business Supplies scored an impressive four sets to two win over Deuce Bags. Deuce Bags were without captain Abbey and this proved the difference. Maddy McCormick stepped up and accounted for Molly Kennedy 6/4 while Gabe Goodrick showed the value of his consistent performances on court this year to score a 6/4 win against sub Joseph Tanswell. Hayden Westcott and Koby Wirth played a nice competitive set with Hayden getting the win 6/5.
Dreamteam had a five sets to one win over Smashes last week and Mark Ritchie was in scintillating form with his newly restrung racquet assisting in his speed of shot whistling and skimming past the Smashes men. The ever consistent Tim Bell was tested last week and Jerry Cham found some brilliant form to score an upset 6/5 win. The ‘veteran’ Darren Fisher seems to be cut down with a few niggling injuries of late but is blaming his DOB for his lack of performance and rally speed this comp. The Dirty Daws and Net Nuts had a fairly social evening of tennis and the younger Daws bolted home with a clean sweep of sets.
