Minor Triples Championship: The first semi-final of the Minor Triples was played on Saturday, November 10.
The team of Greg Howlett, Rob Irving and John Dunn got away to a great start, winning the first six ends to lead 11-0 against Steve Turner, Guy Ellery and Wilbur Harris.
Steve’s team gradually got back into the match but it wasn’t until the seventeenth end that they took the lead 17-16.
Over the next three ends the scores were fairly even but Steve’s team then took control of the match, winning the last five ends to run out winners 30-18 and advance to the final.
Handicap Singles Championship: With the advantage of a three shot handicap difference John Dunn took an early lead but after ten ends Keith MacRae had taken the lead 9-8.
After fifteen ends the scores were level, 12 all, but Keith regained the lead on the next end to lead 24-12. Keith continued to build on his lead and after twenty-three ends won the match 25-14.
Handicap Pairs Championship: With the help of a seven shot handicap difference, Bernie Mitchell and Gordon Dickson built up an early lead against Gary McPhee and Jim Blake but after seventeen ends the scores were level at 21 all.
Gary and Jim won the next end to take the lead for the first time but Bernie and Gordon won the next two ends to lead 24-22. The next end went to Gary and Jim and the scores were again level, 24 all and in a tense twenty-second end Gary and Jim scored the shot they needed to win the match 25-24.
Mixed Pairs Championship: On Sunday, November 11, in the first round of the Mixed Pairs Championship, Mark Dwyer and Jan McPhee had the better of the early ends to lead Pat Cooney and Dave Johnson 7-3 after five ends.
Scores were fairly level until Pat and Dave scored five shots on the sixteenth end to take, what turned out to be, a winning lead 19-13 and they eventually ran out winners 23-17.
Social bowls on Thursday, November 8 had a small field of fourteen players contested two games of Pairs and one of Triples.
Col Mudie and John Watson started slowly against Greg Howlett and Greg Huggins and scores were tied 6 all after seven ends. The two Greg’s jumped to the lead scoring six shots on the eighth end but Col and John got their game together and won ten of the remaining ends to win the match 26-18.
Steve Mills and Ray Jones struggled early in their match against John Ward and Rob Irving and after thirteen ends it was 14 all. Steve and Ray then found form to win six of the remaining ends and the match 23-16.
In the Triples match, Ron Hornery, Mal Porter and George Bradley didn’t play bad bowls but came up against a very hot team of Geoff Freeman, Bruce Deland and Gordon Dickson. All afternoon Geoff’s team played great bowls and ran out winners 29-16.
The Jackpot was won by the teams on Rink 12 and Col, John and the two Greg’s shared $160.
Saturday, November 10, twenty –two bowlers turned out and it was good to welcome Alan Affleck, visiting from the Railway Club.
Four games of Pairs were played and the results were:
- Keith MacRae and Col Wood 23 – Arthur Corbett and Gladrin Sun 13. Geoff Freeman and Chris Dunn 23 – John Ward and Ray Jones 18. Tom Furey and Gordon Dickson 24 – Steve Mills and Ian Simpson 18. Liz Byrne and John Watson 21 – Steve Ryan and Les Kent 16.
In the Triples match Bruce Orr, Joe Crowley and Lorraine Baker defeated Col Mudie, Alan Affleck and Ted Wright 19-11. The Jackpot wasn’t won and will carry over to next week.
Sunday, November 11
In a triples match, Gary McPhee, Greg Howlett and Wally Grant lead 14-12 after fifteen ends but their run ended there. Maree Grant, Tom Furey and Lorraine Baker found form and won the remaining ends to win the match quite comfortably, 24-14
Twilight Bowls: Thirty six players turned out on what was a great night for bowls.
The results were: The High Rollers and Rebelle fought hard all night and in the end they could not be separated, the match ending 12 all.
The Three Amigos were just a bit too good for We Wreck ‘em ‘N’ We Fix ‘em 12-8. Central West Glass proved too good for the Loopy Loppers, winning 18-10. The Cousins had a fairly comfortable win against The Golden Girls, 18-8. Bowls Bros. had a convincing win against J & CK.
Casey Surveying had all the luck against 1300 Bugman. Had the luck been shared a little bit more evenly the Bugman would have fared better and the score line would have been a lot closer.
Thanks to Bob Riseborough for his help in organising the games and Tom Furey and Mark Dwyer for the great snacks after the game.
Badge Draw: The badge draw is up to $2600 and will again be drawn on Friday night at about 8.30 after the raffle.
Hope to see you at the club for the chance to enjoy a great Pub style meal, winning a meat, tray or voucher and (if you are a Member) being in the draw for $2600.
