The celebration dinner – to be held at the Parkes Services Club from 6.30pm – marks the 100th year after the Germans signed the documents ending World War 1.
The war which was named the Great War saw countless men, women and children killed and it was a war that saw many Australians encounter.
In celebrating the signing of the documents which the Germans reluctantly signed just after 5am on November 11, 1918, saw the mood in Australia both naturally joyous and sombre – joyous that, after four long years, the boys would be coming home, and sombre in that there would inevitably be ‘too many spaces in the line’.
In announcing the celebration dinner Secretary of the Parkes RSL Sub-Branch Paul Thomas said this would be a chance for the people of Parkes to come and join in the occasion and join members of the Sub-Branch in honouring the town’s and district’s fallen heroes.
And in exciting news announced just this week, a returned serviceman from Parkes has offered to fund the cost of the dinner for school captains from all schools in Parkes, including Red Bend Catholic College, so they can attend.
The Sub-Branch has decided to accept this very generous offer.
The Sub-Branch has booked a night of entertainment which will include well known comedian Robert Shehadie and live music by local entertainer Barry Green.
Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack has been invited to attend, while National Party Senator John “Wacka” Williams is a confirmed attendee, with the evening to be chaired by well known and highly talented local stock and station agent Geoff Rice.
The highlight of the evening will be the delightful three course meal, as well as the cutting of a special celebratory cake, which has been provided by one of the country’s premier cake decorators Parkes’ own Kath Swansbra.
The Sub-Branch has also organised a display of World War 1 memorabilia.
Tickets for the Celebration of Armistice dinner are $60 and available from the Parkes Services Club office or by going online to www.123tix.com.au
