Parkes Taxi Owners Pty Ltd submitted a request for the second taxi zone to council’s Traffic Committee in August.
Parkes Taxis is looking to convert a section of parking in Church Street, on the east-bound traffic side between Clarinda Street and McGees Lane, into a taxi zone.
The existing taxi rank in Dalton Street, opposite the Coachman Hotel, will remain operational.
And if the second rank is given the green light, Parkes Taxis plans to operate the two much like day and night taxi ranks – with the Church Street location being the day taxi rank because its closer to more shops and supermarkets, and Dalton Street as the night zone because its closer to pubs and restaurants.
Council is seeking comment from residents and business owners on the proposal and is asking to receive submissions by Friday, October 19.
Submissions are to be emailed to psc.engineering@parkes.nsw.gov.au.
Following a review of all submissions and comments received, the proposal will go back before the Parkes Traffic Committee and a report will be presented at a future Parkes Shire Council ordinary meeting.
Council will also review the proposal in relation to the Parkes CBD Vibrancy Strategy.
Some residents have already voiced their thoughts on the proposal on Parkes Shire Council’s Facebook page.
Some have said it’s hard enough to find parking in the area – especially when it comes to taking an animal to the vets – without losing more valuable spaces.
One woman said she was happy to give up one or two parking spots but not the entire space, while another said it would have a far greater negative impact on nearby businesses in relation to fumes and mess left behind those using the taxi service.
Others agreed it was a better and more central location or suggested the Woolworths carpark as a great place for a taxi zone.
