In a close match, John Dunn had a two shot handicap advantage against Greg Howlett, but after five ends Greg had the lead 7-2. John won the next four ends and with the help of four shots on the seventh end had taken the lead 10-7. The lead changed hands several times and after twenty-four ends the score was level, 24 all. On the deciding end, john scored the single shot he needed to win the match and advance to the next round.
In other matches, Rob Irving defeated Greg Huggins 25-14 and Gary McPhee proved too good for George Bradley, 25-15.
Social Bowls
Thursday, October 11: With the threat of rain, only twelve players turned out to play three games of Pairs with a couple of close results.
John Ward and George Bradley won the first end but after four ends Col Mudie and Bob Freeman had taken the lead 7-3. Neither side was able gain the upper hand and with two ends to play the scores were level, 15 all. John and George scored two shots on the second last end and were able to hold on to win the match 17-16.
Graham Dixon and Gordon Dickson led for most of the match against Col Woods and Mal Porter and with five ends to play had a lead of 19-11. Col and Mal fought back strongly but could not quite bridge the gap and Graham and Gordon ran out winners 22-20.
In the other match, Wally Grant and Ray Jones defeated Steve Mills and John Dunn 25-16.
Wally and John were the rink winners but could not win the Jackpot.
Saturday, October 13: Once again only three games of Pairs were played with two games (maybe) finishing on the same score.
It wasn’t until the fifth end that Keith MacRae and John Dunn were able to take the lead, 6-5, against Rob Tinker and Greg Huggins. Scores remained fairly close and after sixteen ends Rob and Greg had the lead 16-15. Keith and John then scored seven shots over four ends to take a winning lead of 22-16 into the last end. The score card indicates Rob and Greg scored 5 shots on a thrilling last end but I have a suspicion the last end wasn’t played. I may be wrong but you can make up your own mind.
In the other close match, John Ward and Gordon Dickson lead for most of the match and with four ends to play had a ten shot lead against Ray Jones and Rob Irving, 22-12. Ray and Rob came back strongly over the last four ends but could not quite bridge the gap and John and Gordon won the match 22-21.
In the other match, Greg Howlett and Martin Tighe were too good for Arthur Corbett and John Carr, winning 27-15.
Keith MacRae and John Dunn could not win the Jackpot and it will roll over to next week.
Twilight Bowls: The threat of rain may have kept a few people home and a disappointing turn out of only eight teams took advantage of the free night to start the Twilight Bowls for the year.
All of the games were fairly close and the results were:
Purple People 15 – Bowls Bros. 11
Three Amigos 13 – JAC 10
Central West Glass 15 – Casey Surveying 12
Loopy Loppers 11 – We Wreck ‘em ‘N’ We Fix ‘em – 9

Parkes venue proved better for the veteran golf, following the cancelled event at Forbes last week. Parkes were successful in the Mick Miller Shield points 152 to Forbes’ 144.
Dale Stait (Pks) proved too strong for the field on 28 pts closely followed by Dub Rodgers (Pks), one point back.
Ken Sanderson (Fbs) picked up to encouragement award. Nearest the pin winners were, on the fourth hole, Alf Davies and John Whatmore and, on the 11th, Gary Pymont and John Dwyer.
Next week we travel to Condobolin for the continuation of the Lachlan Valley 18 Holes Competition.
The bus will depart from the Parkes Club at 8.15am. We are all sadden by the sudden, but not un expected,
death of Cooper. He never hit a golf ball but was a much-loved identity by all the members. May he rest, now, in peace.

Racing
Gulargambone Races
A run of outs lasting more than four and a half years and thirty six races came to an end when eight year old mare Decades won the 1200 metres Class 1 Handicap at Gulargambone on Saturday.
At debut in January 2014 Decades won a Maiden Handicap at Seymour when trained by Lee and Shannon Hope in Victoria.
In 2015 Decades came to central west New South Wales and over following seasons ran several placings when trained firstly by Karen McCarroll at Wellington and then Peter McCauley at Dubbo.
Back racing in 2108, Decades is now trained at Coonamble by Michael Denison and was well ridden by Vad Bolozhinskyi at Gulargambone.
After racing in the box seat Decades ( $3.50 favourite ) won by a half neck from Velvet Glove ( Ashleigh Stanley,$6 ) with Future In Doubt ( James Rogers, $10 ) finishing third.
Ian Holland got Coonamble trainers off to a good start when Turramurra ( Wendy Peel, $3.50 ) raced in the leading division and won the Maiden Handicap ( 1100 metres ) by nearly a length from Poppy’s Freckle ( James Rogers, $3.80 ) and Tellmay ( Jodi Worley, $13 ).Turramurra was bred and is raced by the Kennedy family from Come-By-Chance.
Second leg of a winning treble for apprentice Wendy Peel was the Sally Torrens, Gunnedah trained Auric Gold in the 1450 metres Maiden Plate.
Cec Hodgson completed a treble for Coonamble based trainers when Pedro’s Zariz ( $4 ) patiently ridden by Jodi Worley, gained a split to beat Strike Zone ( Reece Jones, $8 ) and A Wild Enemy’s Pick ( Vad Bolozhinskyi. $3.20 ) in the Benchmark 50 Handicap,1800 metres.
Wellington jockey Daniel Pitomac had won the Benchmark 45 Handicap ( 1450 metres ) on the Brett Thompson, Gulgong trained Shake Off and looked likely to also win the feature race the Halcroft and Bennett Gulargambone Gold Cup ( 1200 metres ) when the Dar Lunn,Dubbo trained Zoutenant darted through a gap in the straight and dashed to the lead.
Medal Afrique ( Wendy Peel, $2.50 favourite ) however finished fast on the outside to beat Zoutenant ( $3.50 ) by a short half head with Pompous ( Leane.G.Henry, $5 ) filling third place.
An eight year old grey gelding, Medal Afrique is trained at Tamworth by former jockey Luke Morgan.
Narromine to race on Saturday with the feature being the Dandy Cup while the Coonabarabran Cup is on next Monday.
Forbes Races
The winning treble ridden by Greg Ryan at Forbes on Saturday included a double, We Love Rugby and Hu Hit Hu, for local trainer Dennis Bush.
The three win haul for the champion jockey began with the Graham Grimmond, Condobolin trained Zarwrinkles in the Shead and Nicholson/Walkers AG N Vet 1200 metres Maiden Handicap.
Parked in a good spot by Ryan, Zarwrinkles ( $4.80 ) broke clear in the straight and won by over four lengths from Lolly ( Amelia Denby, $21 ) and Call Me Trinity ( Tony Cavallo, $17 ).
The following race, the Achesons Home Timber and Hardware Class 2 Handicap ( 1400 metres ), saw the Dennis Bush, Forbes trained We Love Rugby ( Greg Ryan, $2.30 favourite ) gain a rails run at the top of the straight and sprint to a three lengths win over Dragon’s Shadow ( Robbie Brewer, $3.80 ) and All Ellie ( Richard Bensley, $9.50 ).
Bringing up the treble for Greg Ryan and double for Dennis Bush, Hu Hit Hu ( $2.30 fav.) enjoyed a charmed run behind the Cobar sprinter Vonnida and eventually scored by over a length from Naoko ( Kath Bell-Pitomac, $13 ) and Fairy Fragments ( Amelia Denby, $13 ) in the Forbes Magpies Group11 Premiers Benchmark 56 Handicap,1100 metres.
Hu Hit Hu and We Love Rugby are both raced by the Taylor family from Sydney and are half sisters being from the mare Sacred Hit.
After wins at Mendooran and Mungery ( Picnic Cup ), five year old mare Viva Lavino completed the hat-trick when a convincing winner of the 1600 metres Peter Maher Shearing Services and Bryton Wool Benchmark 58 Handicap.
Well ridden by Tiffany Jeffries for her mother the Parkes trainer Sharon Jeffries, Viva Lavino ( $13 ) tracked the leaders before finishing best to account for Son Of A Fox ( Greg Ryan, $3.90 ) and Chief Of Arlington ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $5 ).
Viva Lavino is part owned by Alex Prout the 2018 Parkes Spacemen rugby league captain/coach and husband of the winning jockey Tiffany Jeffries.
Dubbo trainer Michael Lunn had three starters in the Forbes Machinery Centre/Lachlan Readymix Maiden Handicap ( 1200 metres ) and it was his grey gelding Churbro ( Richard Bensley, $9.50 ) which produced a big finish from well back to beat Duntroon Man ( Andrew Banks, $7 ) and Dastaan ( Tony Cavallo, $3.50 ).
There were plenty amongst the big crowd at Forbes who backed the winning favourites from the Dennis Bush stable however it was a $19 chance Bee Double Bee taking out the final event, the 1100 metres Forbes Caravan & Cabin Parks Benchmark 58 Handicap.
The Rodney Robb, Nyngan trained Bee Double Bee ( Katelyn Jenkinson ) rushed down the outside to beat Dart Street ( Andrew Banks,$8 ) and Good Verdict ( Robbie Brewer,$8 ).
The $500 cash prize donated by Peter Maher Shearing Services and Danny Molly of MBR Clothing for the Trainers Pointscore was shared by Brett Thompson and Dennis Bush.
