Organised by passionate local volunteers, Parkes & District Relay gives the community a chance to join forces in support of everyone affected by cancer, have fun at a community festival, and raise vital funds Cancer Council’s world-class research, prevention, advocacy and support services.
Renee Rice, Chair of the Parkes Relay committee said the decision to postpone Parkes Relay was not made lightly.
“The timing of the change reflects current conditions within the community,” Renee said.
“With so many people affected by drought and local businesses having been so generous with their support we felt it would be too much to go ahead just now.
“The relay is a mix of reflection, fun and fundraising and it’s important we respect the event and the local community too.”
Funds raised from the event go towards many Cancer Council initiatives, including local activities such as ‘Transport to Treatment’, a free ride to and from cancer care for people that have no other option for the long ride to vital medical assistance.
Parkes & District Relay welcomes locals of all ages to a fun-filled, 24-hour experience.
Teams of friends, families and colleagues raise money in the lead up to the Relay, where team members take turns walking around a track to signify that cancer never rests, so neither do we.
Brendon Argyle, Community Relations Coordinator at Cancer Council’s Western NSW office said that in the last 10 years, the community has raised more than $200,000 at Parkes & District Relay.
“We are thankful for the community’s ongoing support and will be planning for the March 2019 Parkes Relay to be one of the biggest and best events yet,” Brendon said.
“We have been contacting as many registered participants as possible over the last week, and still have a few to contact, all existing registrations will be automatically moved for the new date and team information nights will be held in the coming months to answer any questions.
“Funds raised from Parkes Relay will go towards local Cancer Council initiatives such as Transport To Treatment, Cancer Council Information Service, and also gives locals a chance to celebrate and reflect on how cancer has affected them, or someone they love.”
