In a brilliant match of hockey, golden goal extra time was required to separate Rovers Black and Rovers Gold with Black claiming the A grade women’s title 3-2.

The first half was very tight with both teams working hard to create attacking opportunities. Both sides forced penalty corners but were unable to convert these chances.
The scores were locked at 0-0 at half time after some strong defence by Gracey Denham-Jones for Black and Jane Grosvenor for Gold.
Rovers Black took a 1-0 lead fifteen minutes into the second half when Abigail Simpson converted a penalty corner variation with a nice shot on goal.
Rovers Gold levelled the scores five minutes later after Louise Edwards got away a sweeping tomahawk shot to score a brilliant goal.
Black began to get an upper hand forcing a number of penalty corners and looked to have scored on two occasions but both goals were disallowed.
Black looked to have sealed the victory with 40 seconds remaining on the clock when Denise Gersbach converted a penalty corner with a strong shot from the top of the circle.
Gold sprang into attack from the restart and worked their way to the circle to force a penalty corner as the full time siren sounded.
Cass Hodges received the ball on the top of the circle and made no mistake getting a quick shot away which rocketed against the backboard to level the scores and force the match into golden goal extra time.
Gold forced an early penalty corner but the Black defence were strong and repelled this chance.
Five minutes into the first period of extra time Black worked the ball into the circle through Chloe Carty and Lara Piercy.
Lara Piercy slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Black a 3-2 victory.
It was an excellent match of hockey with all players excelling in the match.
Best and Fairest for Rovers Black were Abigail Simpson, Jacqui Simpson and Denise Gersbach with Cass Hodges playing strongly for Rovers Gold. Abigail Simpson was awarded Player of the Match after an outstanding midfield performance for Rovers Black.
A Grade Men
In a very entertaining game of hockey Magpies Black defeated their more fancied opponents, Rovers, 2-1.
Magpies started the match brilliantly and surprised the Rovers defensive unit pressuring theme from the outset.
Magpies took an early 1-0 lead after Glenn Johnstone scored a brilliant diving tomahawk goal much to the delight of his younger team-mates.
This early goal lifted Magpies and they were rewarded five minutes later when NSW superstar, Koby Johnstone, calmly slotted home a beautiful drag flick on a penalty corner.
Rovers struck back shortly to bring the score back to 2-1 when they broke into attack down the right side of the field. The ball was crossed into the circle with Aaron Thorne converting after a scrap in front of the goal-mouth.
Rovers came out firing after the half time break and peppered the Magpies defence.
In an inspired performance, goalkeeper Rodney Coleman saved everything thrown at him by Rovers.
Brad Gardiner, Hamish Orr and Aaron Huppatz got some brilliant shots away, but it was certainly Coleman’s day as he well and truly kept his side in the match.
With seconds remaining on the clock the ball was driven hard into the circle. A brilliant dive from Graeme Thompson looked like Rovers would deflect the ball into the net but it missed Thompson’s stick by millimetres.
Magpies Black claimed the A grade men’s title 2-1.
Best and Fairest for Magpies were Rodney Coleman, Tim Wright and Koby Johnstone with Graeme Thompson and Hamish Orr the best for Rovers.
Rodney Coleman was awarded Player of the Match after his incredible goalkeeping performance.
B Grade Women
In a very close match of hockey, Rovers Black came from behind to defeat Rovers Gold 3-2.
Rovers Gold began the match strongly scoring two early goals after Jo-Anne Lyons converted a penalty corner and Chloe Carty scored a nice goal.
Rovers Black fought back strongly with Abigail Simpson and Sass Tildsley converting two nice goals to level the scores at 2-2.
It looked like the match was headed to extra time but Rovers Black forced a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the match.
M’liss Ross received the ball on top and cracked it into the back of the net to give her side the victory.
Best and Fairest for Rovers Black were Rachel Hoy, Ashleigh Sense and Carla Peden with Jo-Anne Lyons and Chloe Carty the best for Rovers Gold.
Jo-Anne Lyons was awarded Player of the Match after an outstanding mid-field performance for Rovers Gold.
B Grade Men
Rovers Gorillas defeated their younger counterparts Rovers Gold 2-1 in a close B grade men’s grand final.
Mat Swindle opened the scoring with a strong shot on a penalty corner to give Gorillas an early 1-0 lead.
Jared Carty struck back with an excellent reverse stick shot to level the scores at 1-1.
There was some excellent hockey on display with the young Rovers Gold team really stepping up against their more experienced opposition.
Mat Swindle ensured victory for his side finishing with a nice goal to give Gorillas the victory.
Best and Fairest for Gorillas were Jeff Mulligan, Billy Payne and Joe Kinsela with Nic Job, Jared Carty and Phil Dunford all playing well for Gold.
Jeff Mulligan was voted as Player of the Match after an excellent performance for Gorillas.
C Grade Women
Star Budgies put on a solid team performance to defeat Marist 1- 0 and claim the C Grade Women’s title.
Star Budgies played excellent team hockey and threw the ball around well throughout the entire match.
Budgies were rewarded for their excellent team play when Lucy Blackstock slotted home an excellent goal to give her side a 1-0 lead.
The Marist defence was outstanding with Leanne Miles, Sharon Scott and Emma Manks working overtime.
Marist could not get a roll on in attack and could not create the scoring opportunities they required.
Budgies were thrilled to claim the title in regular time.
Best and Fairest for Budgies were Lucy Blackstock, Maddison Thomson and Kathryn Blackstock with Ella Morrissey and Emma Manks strong for Marist.
C Grade Men
Magpies Black were too strong for Cellars Aqua claiming a 3-0 victory in the C grade men’s grand final.
Andrew Rice opened the scoring for Magpies after Jackson Plummer sent a beautiful cross ball into circle for Rice to slot into the net and give Magpies a 1-0 lead.
Jackson Plummer extended the lead after he deflected the ball beautifully past the keeper to see the score at 2-0.
Joseph Tanswell ensured victory for his side after he slotted home a penalty corner with a strong shot from the top of the circle.
It was an impressive performance by the young Magpies side with plenty of Parkes’ young talent on display.
Best and Fairest for Magpies were Ryan Dunford and Graeme Tanswell with Hugo Fenton having a very strong game for Cellars.
Ryan Dunford added Player of the Match to his impressive list of awards for 2018 after another outstanding performance for Magpies.
