The 88 year old Parkes Jockey Club grandstand was one of many properties damaged by a freak storm which hit Parkes in 2016. Constructed in 1930, the grandstand at the racecourse sustained major damage due to the extreme high wind speeds encountered. It’s not the first time the grandstand has sustained storm damage. In 1928 a storm that was described as “cyclonic” lifted the roof off the newly built grandstand.

When the latest storm hit in 2016, local builders G.C. McCabe and Co were engaged to make the site safe. Re-construction included several meetings with staff and heritage architects as well as the project architect and engineers. In what is one of the largest heritage reconstruction projects undertaken in the Central West, Director Tim McCabe said he was delighted with the projects end result, believing the facility will have great appeal as an entertainment venue, and thanked both the Club for utilising his services and Gordon for his assistance during the works.
Despite widespread damage, materials were salvaged from the original to be reused in the new building including the bar counter and column infills to the terrace. The Parkes Jockey Club officially reopened the grandstand at a function last month naming the building the Pritchard Pavilion, in recognition of club secretary Gordon Pritchard. Gordon was honoured for his many years of hard work and dedication, and was presented with a plaque naming the new building the Pritchard Pavilion at the event.

The grandstand now includes a fully refurbished bar area and commercial standard kitchen with a new stove, fridge, and dishwasher. Other facilities have also been updated including bathrooms and toilets, a viewing platform, and fully restored terrace seating. The new facilities will get a few trial runs over the coming months with some smaller race meetings before being fully tested at next years Parkes Picnic Races.
