Member for Orange Philip Donato MP said on Thursday he was looking forward to the commencement of the 12 month trial of the 40 km/h speed zones imposed on our state’s roadways where emergency services are performing their vital functions, which kicks-in at midnight on Friday.

“It took quite a bit of effort to get this Government to finally respond to my repeated calls to introduce this safety measure,” Mr Donato said.
“I have sought the introduction of 40 km/h speed zones to protect our emergency services while performing their duties on and near roadways, since September last year.
“Too many of our professional and volunteer emergency services workers have experienced close calls with speeding vehicles, when trying to do their job and save lives.
“It’s dangerous enough doing what they do without having to worry about getting collected by a passing car or truck.
“I knew I had to do something before someone was seriously injured or killed.
“It’s unfortunate that it took so long for the National Liberal Government to respond, because after I flagged this as a serious safety issue requiring immediate attention, a police officer was tragically struck by a car which resulted in the loss of his lower leg.”
Mr Donato publically campaigned alongside emergency service workers and delivered various speeches and questions in NSW Parliament.
“The safety of the brave men and women of our emergency services far outweighs the inconvenience of having to slow down to 40 km/h as we pass them.
“I’m a bit disappointed the Government have failed to listen when I also asked them to properly educate and alert the public to these important changes, because drivers’ awareness is the key to this working,” Mr Donato said.
“They said there would be a comprehensive public education campaign before this trial started, and largely the community are still unaware.
“Many emergency services workers have not seen standard operating procedures or received requisite education, training and safety equipment, either.”
