Known as the Parkes Services Club Junior Open across Australia, the 2018 Silver Category tournament which is one of only two West of Sydney will commence this Saturday and run through until Monday and at close of entries attracted 299 entries from across Eastern Australia.
The Committee understands the value of providing service to the visitors and have sourced The Bogan Barista to supply delicious coffees throughout the three days.
Our tennis Dads will be cooking up a storm with breakfast serving bacon and eggs rolls, as well as sausage sandwiches, whilst our tennis families will be contributing by making lovely homemade sweets to sell across the whole weekend.
This will compliment the tennis club canteen who is best known for their freshly made scones and delicious toasted sandwiches. Of course any locals are more than welcome to come and join the festivities. Hedley Nicholson has been toiling away for the past couple of months making sure the complex once again meets the visitor’s expectations as one of the best centres across NSW.
Great to have a couple of younger troops in Brendon Hunt and Gary Barton helping out this year and after a well attended working bee the centre looks spot-on. Alison McCormick will have a very important job over the weekend as the head Court Supervisor. Alison will aid experienced Referee Trevor Drury.
Local Players
Sadly Jake Magill has just made a return to court last week after being out injured for a couple of months and isn’t able to defend his 16 and under title this year. Ben Evans will be the only local boy competing and will play in the 16s.
Ben will be after some quality match practise before heading to Inverell for CHS Tennis in a fortnight. Ben’s first match will be scheduled around 2pm Saturday. Abbey Kennedy, Maddy McCormick and Holly McColl will play in the 14s and will all take to the court against tough opponents at 12noon. Molly Kennedy and Lily McCormick are the only Parkes girls in the 12s with Ellen Dolbel having netball commitments in Orange. Molly and Lily will both have early starts at 8am.
The dynamic Potts twins will also miss this years event due to work, soccer and school commitments. Players will arrive on Friday with practise sessions starting from 1pm. As soon as the sun rises on Saturday players will hit the courts to warm up with first round matches to commence at 8am. With over 160 matches scheduled right through until 7.30pm Saturday night which equates to more than ten three set matches per court.
Sunday seeing a similar amount of matches it is going to be a very busy two days in the tournament box for Director Helen Magill who has the unenviable task of keeping everyone happy. All things going to schedule only quarters, semis and finals should be left to play from 9am on Monday.
Tennis with the Ace
A very busy week ahead with the Parkes Services Club Junior Open this weekend. All tennis families have been emailed asking for a small amount of assistance over the three days as more than 300 families head to our town on Friday. Locally and there is no junior comp or coaching today due to the Show. As normal next week. Results from last round junior comp included-
Aces Division
Charlotte Wilson was boosted last week with talk of a possible promotion onto the advanced Red ball division next term. Charlotte scored a big win over Sienna Hunt. Jordan Mann was on fire last week and will continue to improve. She took on Adam Smede who always enjoys his weekly bout of tennis. Jordan scored a commanding 8/3 win.
FEDERERS Division
Jack Greenland and Ruby Coote are both continuing to understand the strategy involved with tennis and last week they played a good match which finished in a three all draw. Patrick McPherson and Mitchell Boggs has some good rallies in their match in which PJ was the winner this time 4/1. Izzy Lennox and Phoebe Forbes were seen enjoying each others company while they were playing.
Hewitts Divsion
Only one match in Hewitts division last week with Declan Quade accounting for Anna Davis 3/0. Anna will be working hard to develop her serving in this group.
Nadals Division
Jacques vanWyk and Liliani Latu played a nice match. Liliani is getting the hang of playing tennis and showed some good improvement last week. Jacques went on to win their match 5/2. Tarlei Galstonbury continues to blitz her opponents and last week it was Riley Jones on the receiving end of Tarlei’s shrewd strategy scoring an 8/2 win.
Smashes Division
Patrick Simpson and Mitch Wirth played out a two all draw while Coen Glastonbury just won his match against an improving Kelsey Mann 5/3. Poppy Fisher and Nate Harrison also had an even match with a four all scoreline.
Volleys Division
Sam Rivett always gives his best efforts on court and last week he out played Lucy Hall 5/3 while Hayden Arndell continues to thrive on his extra match play. He defeated Max Coote last week without dropping a single game. Anabelle vanWyk and Sam Riley always have a close match and it was Anabelle who scored a 3/2 win on the whistle last week after plenty of deuces throughout their half hour of play.
Tim Nyugen showed so much potential at his lesson but sadly can’t seem to show the same confidence during his matches. He did however hold off on Ella McColl’s late charge last week scoring a 4/3 win.
Singles and Doubles Division
Nia Boggs and Mitchell Arndell didn’t make it easy for Faith Clarke and Tia Dunn last week winning all three sets in fairly quick time. Faith and Tia are enjoying mixing with tougher opponents and challenging themselves which is a great attitude to have.
Lily McCormick and Tyson Lennox proved too good in their singles matches against Ethan Hunt and Nick Gascoigne last week to secure a two sets to one win. Whilst Charlie Strudwick and Cody Morgan defeated Marcus Moss and Mitch Unger. It was three tough sets with Cody reporting back his singles set against Mitch went to 13/11 in the tiebreak. The two other sets were 6/3 and 6/4 so it was a hard fought match overall.
Handicap Division
Loving the Handicap division where all singles matches have a handicap and last week all three singles sets went to tie-breakers. Excellent!
It was then the partnership of Maddy McCormick and Koby Wirth that prevailed defeating both Abbey Kennedy and Gabe Goodrick along with Joe Tanswell and Molly Kennedy to take top billing for Round 3 with Maddy on 18 points and Koby 17.
Victor Kelly Trophy
Parkes Public School tennis team were in Sydney yesterday playing in the NSW semi finals of the Victor Kelly Trophy knockout competition for primary schools. Results next week.
