Parkes Public School’s 435 students have diverse backgrounds and cultural heritage, which provide a rich learning environment in the spirit of harmony and tolerance. The school has a small school feel, yet has the advantage of large school opportunities in academic, sport and cultural endeavours. The school continues to live by their traditional motto of “strive for success” and are committed to providing “Quality Education for All”, which is their current vision.
The school operates some exceptional programs. It has a very effective Preschool to Kindergarten transition program, called ‘Parkes Public Preps’, which is fun for the children, but also provides an insight into the individual needs of students so that both school and child are prepared. Another key program is ‘Early Action for Success’, which supports professional learning for teachers to continue to implement an evidence-based approach to individualised learning.
Along with a focus on academia, the school supports its students and staff through a school wide focus on well-being. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and their commitment to the Stronger, Smarter program supports the social and emotional development of all our students and staff alike.
Parkes Public are justly proud of their Wiradjuri culture with their Wiradjuri language program renowned across Australia and internationally recognised as a leader in promoting and preserving Indigenous languages. All students learn Wiradjuri, as the school acknowledges that they learn and teach in Wiradjuri Country.
Outside the classroom, there have been many successes in sports at local, regional, state and national level. There is a long tradition of success in hockey, netball, athletics and swimming, while more recently, Parkes have been Western Region Champion School in AFL, rugby union, hockey, tennis and cricket. Cultural talent is valued through performing arts and other programs. Their musical productions are always a highlight on the school calendar, showcasing students immense musical and acting talents. Participation in dance groups, band, choir and recorder groups are encouraged and feature heavily in the school’s performing arts programs.
The staff at Parkes Public School work hard to ensure that every child is equipped with foundation skills of literacy and numeracy, as well as the content knowledge they need to thrive in the years to come.
