The men’s 36 hole championship, sponsored by Dixon Physiotherapy, concluded on Sunday after 18 holes on Saturday, while the women competed in a 27 hole event held over one day.
The men’s championship was all but decided after 18 holes when Mitch McGlashan and Lachlan Buesnell recorded an amazing one over par round of 72 to hold a four shot lead over Blake and Myles Smith.
Needing the leaders to stumble, the main challengers all fell away on the final day as McGlashan and Buesnell secured a seven shot victory over a group of teams, despite carding a score seven shots more than the previous day.
Phil Barnard and Denis Howard finished runners-up via countback after recording back-to-back 79s, courtesy of a Barnard chip-in for eagle on the finishing hole.
The pair also finished runners-up in the overall handicap event, one shot behind Jake Hodge and Joe van Opynen.
Rod Kiley and Peter Bristol led B Division by two strokes after the initial 18 holes but were unable to find their groove on the second day.
They were overrun by Tim Lassere and Ryan Thornberry who recorded scores of 87 and 88 to win by one stroke.
Kiley and Bristol carded 91 on Sunday to finish second.
Fine Latu and Justin Ward were equal second heading into the final round, but ended up raising the bat in the second round with 100.
As if 27 holes on one day were not enough, the women’s Division 1 required a three hole play-off to decide the winners.
Frankie Cock and Kaye Jones held off Dale Matthews and Margaret Hogan to take out both the scratch event and the Betta Home Living handicap event.
Both teams finished with 143 off the stick for 27 holes, with Cock and Jones winning the play-off by two shots.
Their nett score of 112.25 saw them win the handicap by one and a half shots from Matthews and Hogan.
The Division 2 event was more clear cut with Kasey Fay-Rice and Adrienne Brown winning the scratch by a resounding 14 strokes with a 27 hole score of 147.
Next best were Liz Matthews and Ann Berkeley with 161.
It was the same result in the Simon Houston Pro Shop handicap event.
Fay-Rice and Brown with 100.5 nett, 15.5 shots clear of Matthews and Berkeley.
Ladies nearest the pins for the day were sponsored by Liz Matthews and Adrienne Brown.
Sue Holman was awarded the Brian Collins Smash Repairs and Parkes Caravans consistency award.
Holman was in good form over the past three months to claim the award.
The club also held an 18 hole stableford last Saturday for those not competing in the foursomes.
John O’Shannessy proved far too good for the field.
He scored a very impressive 46 points on his way to victory.
This Saturday, Parkes Golf Club will host the three person Stoney Creek Classic.
It is played under an exciting format which requires both strategy and skill to succeed.
