We have all been asked to do it, most of us have thought about doing it and some have even followed through and done it. The “it” is volunteering, and volunteers are a vital part of every community. Volunteers assist people in need, ensure events and programs run successfully, help raise funds and awareness for charities, and perform many other duties throughout society.
National Volunteers Week will be celebrated from May 21 to 27 and is a chance for volunteers, organisations and the wider community to celebrate volunteer’s efforts, share their values, and to further promote the amazing work they do.
One organisation who knows about both the strength of their volunteers and the ongoing need for them is Neighbourhood Central. Last year Neighbourhood Central celebrated 40 years of providing quality service to the community of Parkes and surrounding areas. During this time the centre has undergone a name change to become Neighbourhood Central.
While it continues to improve and expand the delivery of its services for everyone from young children and families through to the elderly, Indigenous Australians, and those living with a disability, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the dedication and enthusiasm of its volunteers. The strength of the organisation lies not only in the fantastic and dedicated staff employed to provide a variety of community support services, but also in their volunteers.
Neighbourhood Central could not exist without the support of the volunteers, each of who provide valuable assistance to their front line services. With a team of over 100 dedicated volunteers throughout the service area covered by Neighbourhood Central the community is well served with community members who tirelessly give of themselves to empower and enrich the lives of those who are in most need within the community.
There is no specific skill set required to be a volunteer at Neighbourhood Central – all you need is a cheery smile and a readiness to help others. Tasks can range from reception duties or being part of the Community Transport team, to visiting as part of the Community Visitors Program or delivering library books to housebound folk. There is no age limit, you can be male or female. As long as you have a willingness to help you can be a part of this much valued team.
Volunteering, which has been proven to be good for your health, both mental and physical, allows you to work with a team of like minded people to provide a better community for all to live in.
Neighbourhood Central is always recruiting for new volunteers and welcomes enquiries from the community, so for more information call 02 6862 3757.
