Relatives of a NSW teacher who was raped and murdered by a cleaner in 2015 before being dumped in a national park are suing the state government.

Bride-to-be Stephanie Scott was killed on Easter Sunday in 2015 by cleaner Vincent Stanford, who is serving a life sentence.
The 26-year-old's body was found burned and dumped in the Cocoparra National Park, some 70km away from her Leeton school.
The NSW Department of Education was not made aware of claims filed in the state's District Court before proceedings commenced this week, AAP understands.
"The department is aware the circumstances resulting in these proceedings are sensitive and all efforts will be made to respond to the claims appropriately," a department spokesman said in a statement.
Stanford, who was arrested three days after the horrific attack, admitted to going "a little nuts" after he dragged Ms Scott into a storeroom where he attacked her with his fists and a large knife.
