The boy was at a relative’s house in Carinya Street when the dog, a four-year-old female American Staffordshire Terrier, bit him on the back of both his legs.
He was taken to Parkes Hospital before being transported to Orange for specialist care.
The dog has been surrendered and will be destroyed.

A 52-year-old Parkes man has been charged with possessing a prohibited drug after calling police to his home for assistance.
Police responded to a call from a Wilga Street resident who was concerned about noises coming from his roof.
When police entered the house they noticed a strong smell of cannabis and discovered a large amount of drug paraphernalia on a coffee table.
The man was cautioned and made certain admissions.
Police seized 31 grams of cannabis and charged the man with possession.
He will face Parkes Local Court.
