“Nimo”, as he is more fondly known, was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma in January – it’s a rare, aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure that develops in the pleura, a thin layer of tissue surrounding the lungs.
Nimo worked for six years removing asbestos from schools and back then was never given the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
He began treatment immediately thanks to the support of Parkes Can Assist.
Now Nimo wants to raise funds for the charity by doing what he loves, playing bowls.
He will be hosting a Can Assist bowls day at the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club this Sunday, May 6.
Those interested in supporting the event will need to have their names in by 9.30am for a 10am start, where two games of 12 ends of triples will be played.
Entry fee is $10, which includes a barbecue lunch, and single entries or teams of three and non-bowlers are welcome.
“It’s just a fun day, I have friends coming out for it and I know there are people coming from Forbes and Condobolin,” Nimo said.
“[Can Assist] has certainly helped me out a lot.
“And I’m not the only one who they provide assistance to.”
Nimo has organised prizes for the day and even plans to have his beard and long locks shaved off by the end of the day to raise a little more extra funds.
The shave will take place between 4pm and 5pm.
The last time he saw a pair of clippers was five years ago.
“At least it will be easier to look after,” he laughed.
Nimo said he didn’t have goal figure, he just wants to raise as much as he can.
“It’s my appreciation for what they’re (Can Assist) doing for me,” he said.
“I want to help them help others.”
Donations can be made at Neighbourhood Central, Parkes Bricks and Pavers, Parkes Blind Awning and Tile Centre and the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club.
