The Year 6 Holy Family Primary School student headed to the NSW PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association) Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Homebush on April 11 and 12.
Matty is now a state champion after claiming gold in the 11-13 years 50m Multi-Class backstroke in 52.99 seconds – and with it, a 2.56 second personal best (PB) time.
In fact, Matty swam PBs in all of his events.
He took 1.48 seconds off his 50m freestyle PB, swimming 45.06 seconds and taking eighth place at the same time.
He slashed 3.23 seconds off his 50m butterfly and placed seventh in the state in a time of 1.27.63, and another 1.74 seconds off his 100m freestyle PB, also coming seventh in 1.46.43.
“We had no idea he won [the backstroke],” mum Sharon Scott said.
“There were 26 swimmers and they read out 25 names before they read his out, we were waiting for his name to be called out.
“He’s so excited.”
It’s the second state gold Matty has won in as many months – claiming his very first state gold at the NSW Catholic Primary School Sports Council (NSWCPS) Swimming Championships on March 21.
He also claimed four silvers at this event.
Like the NSWCPS carnival, Matty has never competed at NSW PSSA level in swimming before.
Matty was representing Polding at the carnival.
Holy Family principal, Denise Gersbach, is thrilled with Matty's amazing achievement.
“Matty finished first out of 26 competitors in his event,” she said.
“To have a state swimming champion at our school is so exciting.
“All the staff and students are thrilled for Matty.”
Matty is now awaiting word from NSW PSSA – who is yet to finalise names and events – to find out if he has qualified for the national titles in the 50m Multi-Class backstroke.
