These events have been held in many places in Australia, the first being in Paddington, Sydney, in May 1995.
Since then more than 30 venues have regularly held their “Spirituality” nights in various pubs.
Everyone is invited to come along and support this initiative, with the pub being a place of neutral ground for people who maybe a little church shy.
Holy Family Parish Priest Father Barry Dwyer and Wilcannia-Forbes Diocesan Director of Mission Kate Engelbrecht are very familiar with the concept, having had experience with the initial Paddington events, and they are both very keen for Parkes to get involved.
The idea is as simple as it is effective, two competent speakers – usually a man and a woman – lead the conversation on a topic that is of some significance, each sharing their thoughts for a total of approximately thirty minutes.
We will have two speakers, Sr Carmel Drew rsj, a Josephite Sister from Bateman’s Bay and Parkes man, Bill Shallvey, who has been heavily involved with the transfer of Southern Cross Care’s excess equipment to Timor Leste.
These two will give their views on the topic “Choose Hope, Not Fear”.
Kate Englebrecht will be Emcee on the night.
Following the talks those present can ask questions or make comments to which the speakers are invited to respond.
All are welcome with entry a gold coin donation.
The “Spirituality in the Pub” concept is one of the forums for conversion instituted by Catalyst for Renewal.
The Commercial Hotel dining room will be open for those wanting to stay on afterwards for dinner and fellowship.
