Over 180 children from across the Parkes Shire participated in the Summer Reading Club this year, with the goal to read 974 books collectively by January 31 – 974 being the most runs scored in a cricket test series which was achieved by Don Bradman in 1930.
Parkes Shire Librarian, Andrea Lovell said this year’s “Game On” Summer Reading Club was a fantastic success, with a total of 1563 books read – smashing the target!
“Congratulations to all those children who participated and thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers who encouraged our summer readers by reading to them and helping them to fill in and return their forms – making it a very special event for all.”
Parkes read 1078, Peak Hill 261, Trundle 121, Tullamore 103 over the summer school holidays.
As part of the wrap up celebrations, participants got to throw wet sponges at library staff, as well as special guests and local sports personalities, Helen Magill and Glenn Pepper, before cutting the Summer Reading Club cake.
“One of the greatest gifts a child can be given is the encouragement to read, visit Parkes Shire Library or any of our branches to join your child up,” Andrea said.
“We have books for all reading abilities, talk to the library staff for advice on books that will appeal to your child and get your child started on a lifetime of reading pleasure.”
