The Jack Scoble Scholarship is supported by the Parkes Shire Council and local community groups.
The scholarship is open to students who completed the Higher School Certificate at a school within the Parkes Shire and undertaking their first year of full-time university studies in 2018.
"The late Mr Scoble, OAM was Mayor of Parkes from 1966 to 1979. This scholarship is offered as a meaningful way to recognise the quality and longevity of his services to the Parkes community," Manager Cultural, Education and Libraries Services, Shellie Buckle said.
Getting an extra financial boost can make tertiary education more accessible for regional young people.
2017 scholarship recipient, Courtney James is studying a Bachelor of Midwifery at University of Canberra.
"Winning the Jack Scoble scholarship was truly amazing and contributed significantly to my move to Canberra,” Courtney said.
“The money I was awarded with went towards purchasing a brand new laptop and my university accommodation. I would like to thank the Parkes community for awarding me with this amazing scholarship, as it has been utilised well and contributed to making my first year of university wonderful," Courtney said.
Applicants must:
Be residents of Parkes Shire who have completed the Higher School Certificate at either a) a school within the Shire; or b) a school outside of the Shire as non-boarding students.
Be entering their first year of full time university studies either a) immediately after graduating high school; or b) after a gap period of no longer than 24 months.
Demonstrate academic merit.
Undertake studies that will offer a benefit to the wider community.
