Hockey
A grade Women: Rovers Black booked a spot in the grand final against Magpies after edging out fellow club-mates Rovers Cubs 2-1. Cubs levelled the scores at 1-1 when Louise Hawken swept on a loose ball in defence and showed good composure to slot the ball into the back of the net. Ash Ward struck back for Black with a fine individual goal to take Black to a 2-1 lead. Black had several other good scoring opportunities but some outstanding defence by fullback, Haylee Wakefield, repelled these chances. With only seconds remaining on the clock it looked like it would go to extra time when Louise Hawken broke away for Cubs. Goal-keeper, Gracey Denham-Jones did enough to push Hawken wide and ensure a Black victory. Best for Black were Ash Ward, Emmie Searl and Bec Cowling with Haylee Wakefield and Louise Hawken playing well for Cubs.
A grade Men: Masters put in a very solid team performance to defeat Star Budgies 5-2 and earn a grand final berth against Magpies Academy. Ben Hawken was at his best for Masters converting a hat-trick of goals and dominating the mid-field during the match. Jayden Pusterla and Tim Wright converted two fine goals to contribute to Masters’ total. Budgies never gave up with Nick Milne scoring an impressive individual goal and Andrew Bourke also scoring. Best for Masters were Ben Hawken and Jayden Pusterla with Andrew Bourke solid for Budgies.
B grade Women: Magpies White earned a spot in the B grade women’s grand final against Rovers after defeating Middleton Maroon in nail-biting conditions. The match was level at 1-1 at the end of usual time which resulted in extra time and then a penalty shoot out to determine the result. Magpies had plenty of attacking opportunities during the match and were rewarded when Eliza Creith pounced on a loose ball in the circle and slotted it into the net. Maroon struck back late in the second half when Gabrielle Noakes got a lovely shot away on a penalty corner to level the scores. Neither side was able to convert in extra time which resulted in a tense penalty shoot-out. Magpies got the upper hand in the shoot-out with Mel ten Cate and Chantel Constable converting their opportunities. Paige Duncan was superb in goals denying Middleton on every shoot-out to win the match for her side. Best for Magpies were Chantel Constable, Mel ten Cate and Kristy Collins with Megan Wilcox, Cherie Simpson and Megan Hornery and playing very well for Middleton.
B grade Men: Magpies Masters and Rovers Gorillas played out a very close match with Masters winning the match 2-1. Rovers were the better of the two sides in the first half with Anthony Lock scoring a nice goal. Masters worked their way back into the match and played a much smarter second half with Liam Wakefield and Angus Arndell converting to earn Masters the victory. Best for Masters were Andrew Finn, Angus Arndell and Will Cassell with Warren Gardiner, Anthony Lock and Brendon Roffe strong for Rovers.
