This month, Judy Thornton was given her badge for being a member for 20 years.
Congrats, Judy!
Our Guest speaker was Rev Ron Spindler, the Minister at St George’s Anglican Church.
Rev Ron, and his wife, Rev Crystal, were looking after several Parish Churches in western New South Wales for about four years. They started in 2005.
Rev Ron explained what it was like travelling in the area around Broken Hill, driving up to three hours to conduct a Church Service.
Some of the towns that they were responsible for included Menindee, Wilcannia, Tilpa, and Tibooburra.
Taking notes was certainly a challenge for me – later, I had to look up how to spell these placenames!
And looking at a map of New South Wales also gave me a better idea of the distances the Spindlers travelled. One trip could be 1000kms, Rev Ron explained.
They may travel 200 to 300 kms to or from Broken Hill, and 50 to 60kms to find a property.
Some of the details of the country-side were very interesting.
The year that there was a big flood in the area, you were able to watch yabbies run by, and see pelicans go for fish.
Broken Hill had eight weeks warning before the floods travelled down the river.
Our next event is on August 15, when we will be having our Trivia Night at the Town Sports and Bowling Club.
Prizes will include handfuls of chocolates, and certificates to the first and second prize winners.
The $10 cost will include a supper of hand-made yummy foods and treats.
Look in the Champion Post for details, plus the various posters in the town. All Welcome!
Next month, our Guest Speaker will talk about Senior’s Safety.
Plus, we will be celebrating our 48th Birthday, wearing Buttons and Bows, at the Bushman.
The contact person is Secretary Pamela, 6863 4552, if you wish to book in for any of these events.
