And on the weekend – he may have qualified 14th in practice, but it was his consistency that scored him a place on the podium this time around at the NSW Junior Motocross Championships.
The Husqvarna rider and 12-year-old from Parkes headed to Canberra over the Easter long weekend to compete at the championships.
He competed in the 9 to U12 85cc division which drew a strong field of 30 riders.
Luke took 14th position following his practice run, from which he managed a consistent day to finish third overall on a track that was particularly unforgiving.
He said he was very humbled by the placing.
Luke also competed in the 65cc division at the titles.
But his campaign did not get off to as great a start as the 85.
Luke’s bike suffered mechanical issues in the last race, where he finished up 21st overall.
The youngster is now preparing himself for the next state title round of three.
This will be held at the Goanna Tracks in Coonabarabran on June 3-4.
Luke is expecting a strong finish in this round on a track that he is familiar with, as most events are at coastal venues that are not part of his regular campaign.
The Canberra round is among many significant placings Luke has claimed in his seven years of competing.
He has been a multiple club championship winner and overall junior club champion at most central western clubs.
He finished second in the last Australian Arenacross Series in Melbourne on his 65cc and is a consistent podium-getter in the East Coast MX series.
Luke is in Year 7 at Red Bend Catholic College and he is the son of Sheree and Tim Chellas of Parkes.
He would like to thank his sponsors for his success - Robertson Motorcycle Centre of Dubbo, Northbound Driver Training, Adrenalin Rush Coaching – Grant Davison, Kixstart Motorcycles and Signs You See.
