Two of Parkes’ finest were named as NSW junior representatives and another our the town’s hockey stars was named an Australian Masters representative just to top it all off!
Koby Johnstone (son of Glenn and Cherie Johnstone) has been selected in the NSW U15 State Boys Team and Gracey Jones (daughter of Kylie and Graham Jones) has been selected in the NSW U15 Blues Girls Team.
Koby who has been chosen as a midfielder and Gracie a goalkeeper, will both play in the U15 Australian National Championships in Moorebank from April 5 to 13, 2017.
The two promising young players, both fourteen, impressed the NSW selectors across three trial weekends which were held in Newcastle (twice) and Bathurst.
They were also involved in the Hockey NSW Centre of Development program held during the off season.
Gracey's week became even more special with the welcomed news of her grandmother, Maureen Massey, being named in the Australian O60's Women's Team - also as a goalkeeper!
It is an extremely rare occasion that a grandmother and granddaughter are still playing the same competitive sport, let alone the goalkeeper position!
To then both be named in high level representative teams in the same week is a truly outstanding achievement!
Understandably Maureen is extremely proud of Gracey and the representative journey that she too has begun.
Maureen and her Australian team mates will tour the UK in June.
They will compete in the Home Championships in Dublin, Ireland and then continue touring to play various international matches in Wales and England.
This will be the fifth time that Maureen will have represented Australia in Master's hockey.
It is also worth mentioning that Koby's grandfather Noel Johnstone, has also recently represented Australia in Masters hockey in the O65's and O70's Divisions.
Noel played in the Australian O70's Men's team at the Masters World Cup played in Newcastle in May 2016, as well as in the O65's Division in World Cups held in South Africa in 2013 and London in 2012.
