In a video posted across social media, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto was joined by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri to announce a date for a sequel to the Super Mario Bros Movie.
The sequel is slated to release in the United States and 'many other markets globally' on April 3, 2026.
The film will again be a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination following the success of the first film which to date has grossed $1.36 billion worldwide.
Nintendo then announced dates for two upcoming Nintendo Switch remakes. A remake of the Gamecube original, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release on May 23, 2024 and a remake of the Nintendo 3DS game, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD will release on June 27.
A blast from the past
The final surprise from the video was that Dr. Mario, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis will be dropping on Nintendo Switch Online this week on March 12.
Dr. Mario was released for the Gameboy in Australia in 1990, and Mario Golf and Mario Tennis were released for the Gameboy Color in Australia in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
New LEGO sets announced
Separate to the video above, Nintendo's collaboration with LEGO continues its assault on our wallets. The brick-building company posted its own Mario Day video where it announced a series of new sets based in the Mario universe.
The other three announced sets are coming on August 1. The first is Battle with Roy at Peach's Castle, which completes the Koopalings in LEGO form. Next was King Boo's Haunted Mansion which features hidden secrets, and finally The Bowser Express Train designed after the Bowser train from Super Mario 3D World.
Finally, the video ended with a tease of what's to come with a LEGO Mario Kart set expected to release in 2025.
