Wins in Divisions 2 and 3 were offset by losses in Divisions 1 and 4.
Parkes’ Division 1 side was outplayed by a strong Forbes team featuring Sydney pennant player and reigning Parkes Open champion John Betland and his former Parkes Open champion brother, Steve.
Forbes ran out convincing 4-1 winners.
The two Betlands proved too good for Lachlan Buesnell and Peter Dixon respectively.
Despite carrying good form into Sunday’s round, Rob Hey and Brad Scott both had a tough start to their pennants season.
The shining light for Parkes was the performance of Aaron Wilkie.
While by his own admission he did not play at his best, Wilkie was good enough to claim a 4 and 2 victory to record Parkes’ solitary point.
The Division 2 side scored a very good 4-1 victory, turning the tables on Bathurst from last year.
While on paper it is a convincing victory, the match was a lot closer than it looks.
Last year’s star Tim Burke was the surprise loser of the first match, having a rare off day.
Brendan Chambers and Joe van Opynen put Parkes on top 2-1.
Chambers needed an extra hole to win his match while van Opynen scored a solid 3-1 victory.
Phil Barnard needed two extra holes to win his match.
A clutch up and down on the first extra hole kept Barnard in it before a massive drive and excellent 5-iron had him on the par five, 2nd hole in two shots and holding the upper hand.
A good lag putt from Parkes’ No 2 saw his opponent concede the hole and the match.
Seemingly cruising 2 up with two holes to play, a couple of blips saw John Green also require an extra hole to win his match.
Parkes’ Division 3 side got off to a good start with a 3-2 victory.
Led by captain Mick Smith, the No 3s have began well in a competition where they have the quality to go a long way.
Smith won his match while Jake Hodge also secured a 2 and 1 victory.
Playing in his first match for the club, Todd Jayet was understandably pleased to score a maiden victory.
Peter Bristol failed to replicate his form from the day before to lose while Rod Kiley has had better days and will hope for another chance this weekend.
The Division 4 team suffered a heart-breaking loss after putting up a very good fight.
Captain Jarrod Kemp began his Parkes pennant career with an excellent victory.
Justin Ward replicated Kemp’s heroics with a victory in his first match for the club.
Luke Greenwood was a little underdone with not much golf recently while Finne Latu came up against an opponent who would fit easily into higher divisions.
It all came down to Dave Harwood’s match which required extra holes.
Unfortunately for Harwood and Parkes, he was unable to come out on top.
This weekend, Parkes travel to Bathurst to play Cowra in Divisions 1, 3, and 4, and Forbes in Division 2.
