New Parkes president Jamie Pope is only 24 hours into the job but there’s already an issue that demands his immediate attention.
Western Rams fullback Sam Dwyer is considering a move to Group 10 ahead of the 2018 season which, on top of the retirement of Dennis Moran, would prove a telling blow for the Spacies moving forward.
Pope was aware of his gun fullback’s situation on Wednesday and said the club would love to retain the decorated representative No.1.
Dwyer enjoyed one of his best seasons in Group 11 last year, earning another Rams jumper and winning the group’s player of the year award.
“I coached him at his first session in juniors in under 8s and thought ‘wow, this kid is a talent’,” Pope recalls.
“We’d love for Sam to run out with us again next season. He spent a fair part of last season as captain.
“We’re hoping that can be resolved and he stays with Parkes. But no matter what he does he’ll have our love and blessing.
“He’ll always be welcome here.”
Pope was elected to lead the club heading into next season following a third annual general meeting on Tuesday night.
The new chief admitted that delay in forming a committee has put the club on the back foot retention wise, but bumper numbers throughout the 2017 season meant the Spacemen were a strong position.
