And while crocodiles, box jellyfish and the most lethal breeds of snakes get most of the fearful ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’, outside of Dubbo’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo they aren’t to be found in our neck of the woods.

Which doesn’t mean there aren’t creatures in and around the Central West who can’t give you a scare or worse.

There were two menacing little examples in close proximity at Duntryleague Golf Club in Orange on Saturday afternoon, but thankfully the sizable wasp and the even bigger spider were too preoccupied with each other to inflict any damage on the nearby golfers.

In something of a surprise, it was the wasp who prevailed in the death match, last seen dragging the lifeless arachnid’s body across the fifth fairway.
