A grass fire quickly took hold in the hot wind near Ashburnham Road after a car caught alight alongside the highway just after 2.30pm.
The flames came within 10 metres of a family home, where a couple’s newborn baby was sleeping.
The family also lost one third of their feed for their stock.
Police closed the Newell Highway briefly until firefighters from NSW Fire and Rescue and the Rural Fire Service from Parkes and Forbes extinguished the fire.
A tow truck was called in to move the burnt out car.
Firefighters remain on scene checking nearby trees, extinguishing smouldering areas and monitoring the site to ensure it doesn’t reignite.
Motorists are encouraged to drive with caution as they pass through the area.
