The Abolish Daylight Saving Committee is active pressuring the New South Wales State government to conduct a referendum on daylight saving in New South Wales.
At the 2016 by-election for the seat of Orange there was a big swing against the National Party and daylight saving was one of the issues.
OUR RATIONALE FOR A REFERENDUM is as follows:
- The unchangeable attribute of mother nature where sunrise is 20 minutes later in Parkes than in Sydney and the further west people go the later sunrise is.
- Daylight saving was adopted by parliament in 1971 for a trial period and has since been extended to six months and has remained in for a further 40 years without updating people’s views.
- People’s perception and views of daylight saving can change due to age, career, etc.
- Daylight saving has been trialled for 45 years. We experience the difference at the change in October and April every year.
- The hardship caused by daylight saving upon society especially the farming sector, the elderly and children. Daily tasks become harder to complete.
- Shift of population to coastal regions.
- Daylight saving is and has always been a controversial topic. The referendum is the secret vote.
- The concept of daylight saving creates quality time. Quality time can be any time spent with children.
- The real purpose of daylight saving and mankind’s activities in relation to today’s use of energy. A century ago we did not have data to tell us whether daylight saving time made a real measurable impact.
- Democratic countries live by certain principles and fundamentals Re: WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA Volume D: for Democracy page 106 – Agreement on Fundamentals
- Governments being unresponsive to submissions, petitions, letters and protest rallies. Re: WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA Volume G Copyright 1971 U.S.A. G for Government - Important Terms in Government page 274.
- All political parties have a documented set of beliefs and guidelines for reference.
- Several daylight saving proposals are currently being mentioned e.g. NSW for a half hour adjustment forward for the remaining months of the year. Pressure from Clover Moore for a further three weeks extension of daylight saving until the last Sunday in April.
- Pressure groups along Queensland’s Gold Coast and S.E. Brisbane to have daylight saving in Queensland. THE ABOLISH DAYLIGHT SAVING COMMITTEE Inc. has launched a new petition for the NSW State Government to conduct a referendum on daylight saving in NSW.

Same sex marriage
Dear Editor
I regret I must disagree with my good friend Rhonda Brain on the effects of same sex marriage on children in the classroom.
If heterosexual only marriage is the answer to some children’s problems, how come there are so many children who arrive hungry at school every day and for whom some of us provide breakfast?
If heterosexual only marriage is so good, how come there are so many women and children having either to endure domestic violence at home or flee it?
And how come so many men kill their partners every year, and sometimes their children too?
Why too do so many young people suffer dreadful bullying at school and in society because they are born attracted to others of their own sex?
And why do so many of these young people commit suicide?
We are not back in the mid 20th century.
We now know that people do not choose their sexual inclinations but are born with them.
The only real impact same sex marriage is likely to have in the classroom is to make young people tolerant of those who are just a little different from themselves, and hopefully that tolerance will gradually spread throughout society.
Christianity is a religion based on love, so how can Christians deny this right to any two people who wish to celebrate their loving relationship by marriage?
Pam Nankivell, Parkes.
Thank you
To the Health Service and the kind people of Parkes and later the Health Service at Orange.
As Victorian travellers returning from some time up North, we feel very fortunate that a health emergency occurred in Parkes.
Upon arriving at the emergency department at the Parkes Hospital the immediate attention received was outstanding and overwhelmed us.
The nursing staff were fantastic together with Dr Oscar, all being so caring and competent. This immediately uplifted our spirits no end and instilled confidence.
Also a very special thanks to Peter and Lorraine who came to our rescue and most willingly and ably assisted with caravan arrangements, visited us and generally cared for us, you have been wonderful.
Also the ongoing care of Dr Harry Lowe and staff at the Orange Hospital was to be highly commended and we sincerely offer our heartfelt thanks to you all.
We also are most grateful to the management of the Spicer Caravan Park who offered assistance.
We are so thankful our health emergency happened here in Parkes and we will never forget you all.
