Parkes experienced its hottest September day on record on Saturday, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recording the mercury soaring to 32.1 degrees.
The previous record stood at 31 degrees on September 22, 2003.
Saturday’s temperature is only the third time Parkes has peaked beyond 30 degrees in September in the last 20 years – with September 30, 2014 at 30.3 degrees also making the cut.
Parkes has literally been through the ups and downs this month – in terms of temperature.
The town encountered a number of days of maximum temperatures in the high twenties, followed by morning frosts and minimum temperatures in the minuses.
The BOM recorded nine days of minus temperatures in Parkes this September, the coldest being -3.6 on September 9 and -3 on September 17.
It’s quite the contrast to last year when the hottest September day was September 7 at 21.6 degrees and not one day dropped to a minus temperature.
Saturday’s and Sunday’s temperatures were also very different – 11 degrees different, with Sunday reaching just 21 degrees.
There may be more 30-degree days still to come this September, with the BOM predicting Wednesday will be another hot day at 31 degrees.
