One of Bernie’s proudest achievements was his persistent advocacy for better signage and road naming of the shire roads. The final straw came when, taking a different route to inspect roads on his way to a Council meeting, he came to the Five Ways intersection. He was at a loss as to which road to take. He convinced the Mayor at that time, the late Robert Wilson, we needed to budget to name our 2000 klm road network. As they say, the rest is history.
Bernie served on the Library Committee, ensuring that library services were maintained and improved in the smaller towns. Bernie loved tinkering and repairing engines, even building a model train to entertain the kids. He became a patron of the Parkes Antique Motor Club. His detailed scale models of horse drawn wagons created in his workshop are prized possessions of family members and close friends.
