The colonial mansion Tresco on the waterfront at Elizabeth Bay is set to hit the market, making it one of the headline trophy listings of this spring.

The historic landmark residence on 3300 square metres with impressive waterfront facilities and a tidal swimming pool is owned by Janette Waterhouse, wife of former art collector and options trader David Waterhouse, a long estranged member of the prominent racing family.

Built as a two-storey residence with 13 rooms in 1868 by prominent Victorian architect and first mayor of Manly Thomas Rowe, there were later additions in the 1880s by George Westgarth before Tresco became the official residence of the Royal Australian Naval support commander for almost a century.
In 1997 it was sold off by the government to the Anstee family for $9 million, and last traded in 2004 when bought by the Waterhouses for $11 million.
Since then there has been extensive work on the sandstone residence, bringing the interiors into the modern era, converting the stables into an office and cellar, and adding a one-bedroom apartment above the garage.

Expect to pay $50 million for the historic landmark, although co-agents Brad Pillinger, of Pillinger, and Ken Jacobs, of Christie's International, are yet to reveal their price guide.
Records show, the Waterhouses are also Manly home owners, having bought their waterfront reserve property at Fairy Bower on a leasehold from the Catholic Church for $2.8 million in 2002.

Record-setter back on market
In Centennial Park, the Federation Arts and Crafts mansion Crossways is also lining up for spring, with a $15.5 million guide through Pillinger's Brad Pillinger and Blaise Griffin.
Set parkside on dress-circle Martin Road, it was built in 1908 for surgeon Dr Gordon Craig and designed by architectural firm Waterhouse and Lake.
In the 1990s, architect Espie Dods undertook a renovation on behalf of former McGuigan Wines director James Smiley and his wife, Jane.

The seven-bedroom residence set a suburb record when it last sold in 2006 to Louise Zavattaro for $10 million, although techie billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes topped that in 2015 when he bought his Braelin for $12 million.
Centennial Park has lost a few colourful locals this year. David and Skye Leckie sold out for $10.5 million to rag trader Nick Kelly, who is rumoured to have taken up with Channel Seven's Madeleine Kennard.
And travel publisher John Pond sold his Mitchell Street property for $4,475,000 to Nigel Russell and Thuy Nguyen, founders of the Australian International School in Vietnam.
