On Saturday, August 5 Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris played the Final of the Minor Pairs Championship against Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley.
Steve and Wilbur won the first three ends to lead 6-0 and it wasn’t until the 16th end that Nimo and George managed to level the scores, 13-all.
The next three ends were divided among the two teams and with two ends to play the scores were again level, 15-all.
On the second last end Steve and Wilbur were holding a couple of shots but with his last bowl Nimo played a brilliant shot to move the jack back and he and George were holding five shots with Wilbur still having to play his last bowl.
Wilbur also played a brilliant shot and his bowl came to rest in the middle of Nimo and George’s bowls. However, the “gods” had favoured Nimo and George and they scored two shots.
On a tense last end Nimo and George scored one shot to claim the Championship 18-15. Congratulations to all the players and in particular Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley on a hard fought win.
Saturday, August 5
With the No.2 Pennants side playing the State Final at Wagga, and with a number of bowlers also travelling to support the team, a depleted field played two games of Pairs and one of Triples.
Keith MacRae and Rob Irving led John Carr and Ray Jones 4-1 after three ends but after that there was never more than two shots difference in the score until Keith and Rob scored three on the fifteenth end to lead 13-9.
John and Ray scored nine shots to one on the next five ends to lead 18-14 with one end to play.
Not to be outdone, Keith and Rob scored four shots on the last end to tie the match 18 all but John and Ray claimed the victory having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played.
In another close match Ron Hornery and Rhona Went had the best of the early ends and after ten ends lead Colin Mudie and Liz Byrne, 15-8.
Over the next six ends Col and Liz scored twelve shots to one to lead 20-17. Both teams scored three shots on the remaining five ends giving the win to Col and Liz 23-20.
The Triples match was also very close. After eight ends Joe Crowley, Bill Skinner and Ted Wright were locked at eight all against John Ward, Bob Freeman and Mal Porter.
After eighteen ends, and for the fifth time, the scores were again locked together at 18 all.
John’s team won the next two ends with single shots to lead 18-16 going into the last end. Joe’s team won the last end but could only manage one shot and went down 17-18.
No. 2 Pennants Team. On the weekend our No. 2 Pennants side travelled to Wagga for the State Pennant Finals and in what I understand was pretty dismal weather, they came away very disappointed having lost all three games against some very good opposition. Congratulations to all the Bowlers on making the State Final and we wish you better luck next year.
