PARKES MEN’S BOWLS
Social Bowls Thursday, July 13: A field of twenty-two bowlers (including two visitors from Orange City Club) played four games of Pairs and one of Triples. One of our visitors, John Payne, joined with Bruce Deland to play Col Mudie and Steve Ryan.

The early ends were evenly divided but Col and Steve got the upper hand and by the end of the ninth end they had a lead of 13-5. John and Bruce gradually got back into the match and after fourteen ends the scores were level, 15 all.
Both teams scored well on the next few ends and with one end to play the scores were again level, 21 all. John and Bruce scored the important shot on the last end to win, 22-21.
In another Pairs match, Warren Bevan and John Carr won the first end to lead Keith MacRae and Greg Huggins, 3-0 but after six ends the scores were level six all.
With the help of a five on the tenth end Keith and Greg opened up a lead of 19-12 by the end of the thirteenth end.
Warren and John fought back and after seventeen ends finally took the lead back, 22-20. However, Keith and Greg won the next three ends and eventually win the match 24-23.
The Triples match was also a close affair. The team of Guy Ellery, Rob Irving and Bob Freeman had the better of the early ends against Graham Dixon, Mick Craft and Bill Skinner to lead 19-2 after eight ends.
Graham’s team fought back well but just failed to bridge the gap and Guy’s team won the match 24-22.
The other results were: Gary McPhee and George Bradley had a win over Ron Hornery and John Taylor 22-13. Geoff Freeman and John Watson got the better of Greg Hough (visiting from Orange) and Les Kent 27-20. The Prize winners were John Payne and Bruce Deland and the Runners-up prize went to Keith MacRae and Greg Huggins.
Saturday, July 15: A field of twenty-four bowlers played six matches of Pairs with a couple of close results.Keith MacRae and Mal Porter did not take the lead until the fifteenth end in their match against Ron Hornery and Jim Blake put just held on to win 19-17.
John Davies and Ray Jones lost the first end against John Hodge and Mike Valentine but won the next eight ends to lead 11-1 after nine ends. John and Mike fought back into the match but John and Ray hung on to win 19-15.
In the other matches: Steve “Nimo” Mills and Bill Skinner had a win against Ted Wright and Joe Crowley. Geoff Freeman and Eileen Bradley had a good win over Mark Dwyer and Janelle Ross. Rob Irving and Gordon Dickson were too strong for Rhona Went and Martin Tighe. Col Mudie and John Watson had a convincing win against John Carr and George Bradley. Prize winners were Col Mudie and John Watson and the Runners-up prize went to Geoff Freeman and Eileen Bradley.
Coming Events: Charity Day in Support of Cancer Research. Entries are still being taken for the charity day to support the local Cancer Research Support Group next Sunday, July 23.
Dress is Mufti and play will start at 10am. Format for the day will be two bowl Triples, teams can be all male, all female or mixed and there will be two games of sixteen ends, one before and one after a sausage sizzle lunch.
There will be lots of prizes and raffles on the day. Entry fee is $10 per player which includes lunch. Entries of teams of three or single entries can be made by calling in to the Club or phoning, 6862 144 and we hope to see a good roll up to support this very deserving Charity.
Christmas in July: A Christmas in July dinner will be held at the Club on Saturday, July 29 commencing at 7 pm. The cost is $30 per head which includes a traditional two course Christmas Dinner and entertainment by solo artist, Amber Cashel playing all your favourite cover songs.
Bookings (for yourself or for a group) are essential and can be made at the Club or you can ring 6862 1446. Hope to see you and your friends on the night, dressed in your Christmas finery.
Men’s Bowling Club AGM: The AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held on Monday, August 14 at 7pm. Nominations for the following positions are being called for (Nomination forms are available at the club and close on Thursday, July 31). President, Vice President, Bowls Secretary, Committee Member (total of five), and Publicity Officer.

Last Wednesday six ladies enjoyed a fun social day of bowls. Next Wednesday six ladies will be going to Forbes for Presidents day.

Local Hockey
A Grade Women: Rovers Black and Rovers Cubs played out a close 1-1 draw. Despite only having eight players, Cubs really matched it with their younger counterparts putting on an impressive defensive display with the young Black girls unable to get around the defence of Jane Grosvenor and Haylee Wakefield.
Denise Gersbach and Louise Hawken were the goal-scorers for their respective sides. Best for Black were Georgia Kearney and Denise Gersbach with Teegan Rodgers and Alyssa Miller playing very strongly for Cubs.
A Grade Men: Magpies Masters were just able to edge out Magpies Academy 4-3 in an exciting match. Academy looked like they would run away with the match when they scored three consecutive goals through Regan Hotham (2) and Aaron Wright.
However Masters fought back with four goals of their own with Joel Thomson and Andrew Finn both scoring a double. Ben Hawken, Andrew Finn, Steve MacGregor and Tim Wright were excellent for Masters with youngsters Koby Johnstone and Kyle Thompson the best for Academy. Rovers were able to run away with a 4-1 victory over Star Budgies.
Goals for Rovers were shared between Kieren Deland, Brad Simpson, Brad Gardiner and Matt Duffy with Jack Buerckner scoring for Budgies. Graeme Thompson and Will Blunt were the stand out performers for their respective teams with Brad Gardiner for Rovers and Connor Davis for Budgies also playing strongly.
B Grade Women: Middleton Maroon and Marist played out a close match with Maroon edging out Marist 3-2. Gabrielle Noakes scored 2 nice goals for Maroon with Lucy Stevenson also converting. Fran Dixon and Jordan Moody both scored for Marist. Megan Gould was best on ground with a very strong performance for Maroon with Louise O’Leary and Lucy Stevenson also playing well.
The ever consistent Jordan Moody and Teigan Miles were best for Marist. Rovers continued their strong run of wins defeating Cellars 4-0. Tarni Parsons (2), Alyssa Miller and Kelly Spedding all scored in the victory. For Rovers, Donna Payne, Laura Kirk and Alyssa Miller played well with Nat Kelly, Michelle Yeo and Monique Rice the best for Cellars.
B Grade Men: Magpies Academy and Rovers Gorillas played out an exciting 3-3 draw. Billy Payne scored a hat-trick for Gorillas with Royce Simpson, Andrew Rice and Paul Moody sharing the goals for Academy.
Kyle Thompson and Mitch McGirr were both outstanding for their respective sides with Simon Scott and Wayne Powter also playing well. In a high scoring match, Cellars defeated Rovers Gold 6-4.
Goals for Cellars came through Craig Kelly (3), Luke Hodges (2) and Hugo Fenton with Brenton Nightingale (2), Nicayden Greenwood and Jared Carty scoring for Rovers. Ryan Edwards had an outstanding match for Cellars and was well supported by Hugo Fenton, Dane Hendry and Craig Kelly.
Jared Carty played well for Rovers. Magpies Masters just edged out Middleton 2-1 in a tight match. Liam Wakefield and Andrew Cassell converted for Masters with David Hogan scoring for Middleton. Best for Masters were Andrew Finn, Andrew Cassell, Liam Wakefield and Luke Coleman with Nick Kelly and Murray Dean strong for Middleton.
Parkes Veteran Golfers
Last Thursday fine weather again greeted a good field of thirty veteran golfers to play a 12 hole event at Parkes. Rod Luyt (Parkes) was the winner on 28 points with Geoff Coles (Forbes) the runner up on 25 points via count-back. Laurie Wakefield (Parkes)was the winner of the strongly contested encouragement award.
Nearest the pins were won by Ian Phipps (A grade) and Chris Goodie (B grade) on the fourth hole and Sunna Bell (A grade) and Graeme Cooke (B grade) on the 11th hole.
The ball sweep went down to 22 points. Parkes won the Mick Miller shield on 146 points to Forbes 136 points. T his week the Veteran Golfers will play an 18 hole Lachlan Valley event at Forbes (9:30am for 10am hit-off).
