Racing
Damien Lane was understandably emotional when Kangaru, the horse he trains at Wyong, won the $35,000 John AND Colleen Lundholm Memorial - Coonamble Cannonball Handicap ( 1100 metres ) at the big Showcase TAB meeting at Coonamble on Sunday.
Lane started his training career at Coonamble where his father the late Frank Hodgson had been an apprentice jockey with the legendary trainer John Lundholm. Ridden a brilliant race by apprentice Jean Van Overmeire, Kanguru ($17) came from near last with a late burst along the rails to beat Cockles (Michael Travers, $9) by a short half head with Lake Lugarno (Mathew Cahill, $2.25 favourite) carrying the 61kg top weight a gallant third.
Despite the narrow defeat the Barry Molloy,Forbes trained Lake Lugarno continues to build an imposing record with eight wins and six placings from 15 starts. Second leg of a winning double for Damien Lane and Jean Van Overmeire was Nissile ($21) which raced fourth to the hometurn then broke clear for a convincing win over Hungerford Wonder (Jeff Kehoe, $81) and Laugharne (Daniel Pitomac, $8.50) in the Halcroft $ Bennett Benchmark 60 Handicap,1600 metres.
Hungerford Wonder, the fast finishing runner up, is trained at Dubbo by Clint Lundholm who is a grandson of John and Colleen Lundholm who were honoured with the Memorial meeting named after them.
Further joy for Coonamble connections when the locally owned and trained Vanblos at big odds won the Conex and Cants Hardware Showcase Maiden Handicap,1200 metres. From the Cec Hodgson stable, Vanblos (Vad Bolozhinskyi, $41) from midfield, rushed down the outside to account for Bonsley (Mathew Cahill, $15) and Augusta In April (Jean Van Overmeire, $3.90 fav.).
In yet another link to Coonamble and the Lundholm family,Andrew Banks rode Minamahal to victory in the A J F Brien $ Sons Showcase Class 3 Handicap,1100 metres. Reared at Gulargambone,Andrew Banks was a successful apprentice with John Lundholm before his move to Sydney where he is still based.
Trained at Dubbo by Cindy Monaghan who is also an owner along with her partner Tim Moses and her daughter Courtney Monaghan, Minamahal ($20) shared the lead then kicked away for a three lengths win over Remittance (Daniel Northey, $2.50 fav.) and Bunny Bad Girl (Jean Van Overmeire, $5).
