The work is part of the planning process for the bypass.
The NSW Government has provided $6 million for planning of the Parkes Bypass, which is also part of the $500 million Newell Highway upgrade program.
Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless said the Parkes Bypass aims to improve freight efficiency and access for longer, heavier vehicles, such as double road trains, B-triples and AB triples through Parkes and linking to existing road train routes to the west.
“Work involves drilling test pits and bore holes and carrying out ground condition investigations,” Mr Colless said.
The work will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, and on Saturdays between 7am and 5pm, weather permitting.
“Work is expected to continue for around five weeks,” Mr Colless said.
“Changed traffic conditions are in place including single lane closures on the Newell Highway closest to where the work is taking place.
“Motorists should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including reduced speed limits of 40 km/h on London Road, Westlime Road and Hartigan Avenue.
“Roads and Maritime Services thanks the community for its patience during this important investigation work.”
