This year’s Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal Parkes area has raised more $4600, with donations still coming in.
I would like to thank the Rural Fire Service (RFS), State Emergency Service (SES), Parkes High School, Parkes Christian School, Red Bend College and the other volunteers, who through the giving of their time, made this year’s collection a success.
A huge thank you to the Parkes district residents, local business, local hotels, the Parkes Leagues Club and Parkes Rotary for their generous donations to make a difference in the lives of those Australians who are doing it tough.
During a typical week, money raised from the Red Shield Appeal helps to provide:
- 100,000 meals for the hungry.
- 2000 beds for the homeless.
- 5000-8000 food vouchers.
- Refuge to 500 victims of abuse.
- Chaplaincy and a helping hand to farmers.
- Counselling services.
These are just a few a services available to Australians in need.
If you would like to donate to the Red Shield Appeal, there is still time to deposit at Westpac Bank, visit the Salvos Family Store at 33 Church Street, Rosedurnate at 46 Orange Street, or visit https://salvos.org.au/ for online donations.
Blessing to you all.

Congratulations to Col
Dear Editor
On behalf of the Parkes Jockey Club we would like to congratulate Col Hodges on his well deserved OAM.
Col has been a great supporter of our club, as well as other race clubs in the Central and Western districts for a long period of time.
He has always promoting Country Racing, and has became an icon of country racing in this area.
He is always willing to help out where needed.
I can given an example of that.
At the June long weekend race day, a patron came to the secretary’s office about 5.30pm and she was inquiring how she was going to recoup her winnings from a bookmaker that had already packed up (the racing completed at 4.15pm) and left for the day.
As we were a little bit lost as to what to do, as we have no control over the bookmaking processes, in stepped Col, who was talking to the last of the jockeys.
He took down the lady’s details and said that he would organise with the stewards when he saw them the following Sunday and would sort out how that lady could collect her money.
This is an example of what Col does that people don’t see.
Congratulations Col Hodges.

Thumbs up
A thumbs up to the Parkes Shire Council for fixing and laying down new bitumen on the dangerous corner on the Cookamidgera Road.
Thank you.
