Mrs Edwards, 55, disappeared from her hometown of Grafton on the north coast on March 14, 2015.
She had been out with friends at the Good Intent Hotel and returned to the home she had shared with her husband, John Wallace Edwards, that night.
However she was never seen again.
Mr Edwards was pinned as a suspect in her disappearance but denied any involvement.
Surrounded by his sons, he fronted a media conference in the months following and appeared to cry as he pleaded for information about his wife's disappearance.
On Tuesday, detectives arrested the 61-year-old in Redcliffe in Queensland.
He has been taken to Brisbane Police Watch House and is expected to be charged with murder.
Detectives will apply for his extradition to NSW.
