The Parkes Spacemen have kicked off this year’s campaign in spectacular fashion, winning three of their four games and ranking third on the Group 11 ladder.
But Moran and his chargers aren’t about to let themselves become complacent, especially as they prepare for potentially their toughest match so far, this Sunday against the Nyngan Tigers.
“I don’t worry about [the ladder], we just focus on our performance, that’s all we need to worry about,” Moran said.
“If you’re thinking about where you are on the ladder this early in the season, you’re putting too much pressure on yourself.
“You just go game by game.”
While Moran admitted they put in a good performance in their 80-16 win over Dubbo Westside last Sunday – their biggest yet for the season, there was still room for improvement.
“I was happy with the support, that we all pushed up together, driving it away,” he said.
“But we just didn’t do that in the second half...in the second half we lost our way and turned over easy ball.
“[But] the big men in the middle set it up for us...the score wouldn’t have gone the way it did if they didn’t lay the platform.”
Try scorers for the Spacemen were Brandon Paige (3), Chad Porter (2), Fletcher Strong (2), Luke Clarke (2), Moran (2), Joseph Dwyer (1), Sam Dwyer (1), James Wood (1) and Joss Cleal (1), and the extras were kicked by Clarke (5), Porter (4) and Epi Sadrodro (1).
Nyngan is sitting at number four on the ladder after round 4 and are known for being hard to beat on their home turf.
Moran said the match at Larkin Oval will be a tough one for his side and it was important for them to go in confident.
“If you’re going to go in thinking you’ll get beat, there’s no point in showing up at all,” he said.
“I’m really happy with how we’ve played our last two games.
“I’m happy with how we’ve been performing but there are still a few things we need to adjust.”
Moran said the round 3 game against the Dubbo CYMS – despite losing 22-36 – was a big improvement for the Spacemen.
While it’s too early to tell who Moran’s standout players are so far, he said what’s noticeably different this season is the team’s match fitness.
“They’re much fitter compared to last year...they’ve gotten stronger,” Moran said.
“We had a good preseason, it shows that if you stick with your training in the off season, it really pays off during the season.
“Fingers crossed we don’t have any major injuries because that’s what let us down last season.”
