The warm morning sunshine, combined with hot bacon and egg rolls and coffee served by the Rotary Club was a brilliant start to a very successful event.  

Runners came from Sydney, Newcastle, West Wyalong, Wollongong, Dubbo, Orange, Trundle and Forbes to attend.

Gavin Stephenson was the first out of 44 runners to finish the 10km event with a time of 0:41:42.

Trundle school girl Monique Morgan took out first place in the 5km, running a time of 0:22:03, 

The 2km run was won by Parkes’ Spencer Draper at 0:07:36 

A highlight of the event was the special presentation of a “Star of Parkes” to Olympic runner Scott Westcott by Parkes Shire Mayor Cr Ken Keith prior to the start in the presence of the 161 participants. 

Scott has had a star in the Orion Constellation named after him, in recognition of his contribution to long distance running and to Parkes, his hometown.

Organiser Jenny Jewell was thrilled with the number of runners and walkers who registered and completed either the 10km, 5km or 2km courses during the morning.  

“The time and efforts of the many volunteers who assisted with marshalling, registering, drink stations, timekeeping and recording was greatly appreciated and meant that the day was a wonderful success,” Jenny said. 

Parkes Rotary Club President David Hughes said Rotary is especially grateful to the many volunteers.

“The Central West Car Club members and staff from Northparkes Mines assisted with marshalling which is an absolutely vital part of the Fun Run to ensure participants safety and the smooth running of the event,” David said. 

The major awards were presented by Jim Fowler, the new Managing Director of Northparkes Mines, Cr Bill Jayet and Parkes Rotary President David Hughes.
