Reigning Club Champion Justin Sutton and Mitchell McGlashan currently share the lead.
At the end of Saturday’s opening round McGlashan snared the lead after a solid 1 under par 70 while Sutton returned a solid even par round of 71 and then during Sunday’s second round Sutton bounced back with another par round while McGlashan returned a one over par round of 72.
Chasing the leading duo is John Green who sits some 11 shots adrift on 153 with Joey Van Opynen in fourth position a further two shots back on 155.
Peter Bristol leads B Grade after rounds of 89 and 83 to sit atop of the leader board on 172 with last year’s runner up Michael Smith three shots back after rounds of 87 and 88 while pre championship favourite Dub Rodgers is within striking distance. He is just 4 shots off the pace along with Dave Whitfield who shot similar rounds to Rodgers.
Veteran golfer and one of Parkes’s favourite sporting identities Laurie Wakefield shares the lead in C Grade with Duncan Constable.
Veteran golfer and defending titleholder Robert Hey has a comfortable 10 shot lead over Ian Phipps in that Division while Lachie Buesnell is a comfortable leader in the Junior section.
In the overall Handicap Division only a handful of shots separates the leading ten players with Duncan Constable currently leading a frenzied pack of chasers on 139 just 1 shot clear of Tim Lasserre and Peter Bristol while Phil Bishop and Laurie Wakefield are just one shot further back on 141.
In the daily handicap events David Stevenson has taken the A Grade trophy with a 68 nett during Saturday’s 1st Round and joining him on the victor’s podium were David Whitfield, 68 nett, in B Grade and Laurie Wakefield in C Grade with an identical nett score of 68.
Nearest the Pin victors saw Tony Hendry at 1090mm on the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st Hole, Tim Lasserre snared both the Griffins Leading Edge 4th Hole and the Money Hole at 3110mm while Paul Thomas at 1300mm snared two ball courtesy of the Dirt Doctor Landscaping sponsored 6th Hole and on the back nine holes saw Michael Smith at 830mm victorious on the Harvey Norman 11th Hole and on the final Par 3 the difficult Westlime sponsored 15th Hole saw Richard Hamilton to the fore at 2300mm.
Saturday’s final two awards the Nearest the Pins on the Parkes Readymixed Concrete 9th Hole and the PJL Group Pty Ltd 18th Holes in two shots saw Robert Cheney victorious at 3330mm on the 9th Hole and Colin Barker at just 700mm on the 18th Hole.
Ball Winners from the round went to 69 Tim Lasserre & Sam Turner, 70 John Green, Mitchell McGlashan, Ron Hetherington, Matthew Lawryk and Dub Rodgers, 71 Joey Van Opynen, Phil Bishop, Peter Magill and Peter Picker, 72 Justin Sutton, Duncan Constable, Steve Edmonds and Phil Barnard, 73 Chris Goodie and Peter Bristol and surviving the countback on 74 was Michael Smith.
Then in Sundays 2nd Round the respective grade winners were Lachlan Buesnell in A Grade with a solid 68 nett, Peter Bristol with the day’s best nett score of 67 in B Grade and Duncan Constable in C Grade with a 68 nett.
All three players congratulated the sponsors Terry Bros as well as the players who contested the day’s play which was played under ideal golfing conditions.
In the Nearest the Pin awards Justin Sutton took the 1st Hole at 3880mm and the 6th Hole at 2540mm, Michael Smith the 4th Hole and Money Hole award at 2780mm, Phil Bishop was victorious on the 11th Hole while on the final Par 3 the difficult 15th Hole was taken out by Cody Hando at 2730mm.
Ball winners went to 68 Rod Kiley, 70 Phil Bishop, 71 Cody Hando, 72 Tim Lasserre, Joey Van Opynen, Justin Sutton, Ian Phipps & Mitchell McGlashan and on 73 nett were Peter Picker and Denis Howard.
LADIES’ RESULTS
Lynne Guise stole the show as she returned a solid 37 points to take out the Cath Kelly sponsored 18 Hole Stableford competition.
Junior golfer Kasey Fay-Rice led home the ball winners with 35 points and she was closely followed by Judy McCabe also on 35 points whilst Kaye Jones and Glynis Conroy recorded 32 and rounding out the ball winners was Anita Medcalf on 31 points.
In the Nearest the Pin awards Colleen Flynn fresh from an adventurous golfing holiday in Vietnam took out the Lyn Rogan sponsored 1st Hole; Judy McCabe the Parkes Pharmacy 4th Hole, Cathy Kelly the Telescope Tyres & Batteries 6th Hole, Glynis Conroy the Parkes Services Club 11th Hole Liz Matthews reined on the tough Railway Hotel sponsored 15th Hole.
HANDISKINS LOOMS
The first of the club’s handicap events that allows golfers to gain recognition the annual Handiskins which is described as the Ultimate game of skins for club golfers commences with the first qualifying round scheduled for Saturday, May 20.
The Handiskins is played under Stableford conditions over five rounds with players paying a one off entry fee of $39.00 and this fee sees $4.00 from each entry being donated to the “Leuk the Duck” Charity organisation which raises funds for “Kids with Cancer”.
With the competition being contested over five rounds the leading four players with the highest combined three rounds of Stableford scores will contest a “Skins Final” and have the chance to win a share of the $1200 in Club and/or Pro Shop vouchers.
All players also receive a Handiskins Registration Pack when they pay the entry fee and is open to both Men and Women who are members of the Parkes Golf Club.
COMING UP – STONEY CREEK AMBROSE
An event new to members of the club is rapidly approaching the inaugural 18 Hole Stoney Creek 3 Ball Ambrose/Stableford competition will be played at the club on Saturday, May 13 and teams are urged to nominate their team as the Nomination Sheet is now on the Club Noticeboard.
THIS WEEK’S GOLF
This Wednesday the Ladies will play an 18 Hole Stroke competition for the 2nd Golf NSW and Club Medals up for grabs while the leading player will also take home the Parkes Services Club trophy and also a Putting competition will be played in conjunction then on Saturday the ladies will also play a similar competition for the Central West Glass Companies trophy.
Meanwhile the men will play the 3rd round of the Terry Bros Furniture & Floorcoverings Club Championships with the Telescope Tyres & Batteries May Monthly Medal being played in conjunction.
This event will also be the qualifying round of the Club’s Matchplay Championships.
The round will also act the 4th qualifying round of the Cunningham’s IGA Scratch Shootout and Griffins Leading Edge will supply the trophy for the player who records the least amount of putts.
Then on Sunday the Men will contest the final round of the Terry Bros Furniture & Floorcoverings Club Championships whilst the Ladies have the opportunity to travel to Forbes for the Forbes ladies Tournament.
