And this year, at the Tullamore Irish Festival, she was.
Crystal is as Irish as they come – she was born in Ireland on Saint Patrick’s Day and she’s a natural redhead.
She’s also a well known tattoo model based in Newcastle and has adorned her body with not only a magical Shamrock on her heart but also the Irish flag.
Her modelling, and especially her ink, has lead her to numerous acting roles in Australia, where she has rubbed shoulders with numerous international celebrities, such as Jackie Chan, Alice Cooper, Nicole Kidman and Elisabeth Moss.
But for four days, Crystal swapped TV and movie sets for the backdrop of the village of Tullamore, heading west the night before the festival kicked off.
Crystal makes it her business to attend Irish festivals around the country and for the first time accompanied a friend and her travel party to Tullamore.
“I found the Tullamore Irish Festival very interesting,” she said.
It was the people that stood out to her.
“As you can see I stand out in a crowd, with my red hair and a lot of ink, I attract certain looks and comments,” Crystal said.
“But Tullamore was different – even though it’s a smaller community and older crowd, they didn’t care less.
“They were so friendly...two Tullamore men recognised me!
“We met this older couple and started talking, then we hear they’re going to the Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes from May 4-7 too, which this year celebrates the year of the Irish.
“So we exchanged details.”
While the Tullamore Irish Festival seemed a little quiet compared to other Irish events Crystal has attended – especially St Patrick’s Day in Ireland itself – she said she will definitely be back.
“I do anything Irish I can,” she said.
“There was always something to do, be that at the showground, the pub, the bowling club or out on the street.
“I like to attend events for the whole time, not just a day. I like to meet the people, see the community and check out their lifestyle.”
When Crystal isn’t attending Irish festivals, she’s acting as an ally punk, a bikie’s girlfriend, drug addict or a lady of the night in movies, television shows and mostly in music videos.
Her career has been progressive, as has her tattoo canvas.
Her tattoos reflect a rough past plagued with domestic violence – her first, on her shoulder, bringing her so much peace nine years ago.
“It took away so much anger...six months later I got another tattoo on the other shoulder,” Crystal said.
She said she never envisaged herself looking like this, nor the lifestyle it created for her.
“I was sitting at a club (seven years ago) seeing a friend’s band and a woman came up to me and said ‘I would like to shoot you’, I said ‘excuse me?’,” Crystal laughed.
Just “going with it”, Crystal soon became a tattoo model and an ideal candidate when film directors needed people covered in ink for specific roles.
Crystal appears in the movie Bleeding Steel, released this year and filmed in Sydney with Jackie Chan as the star.
She also featured in a video clip of Alice Cooper’s, filmed in Perth in 2011 and the television series Top of the Lake.
“[Jackie Chan] is very funny and so friendly, on stage he’s one person, off-stage he’s totally different,” she said.
“And Alice Cooper, on stage he is so angry, off-stage he is really quiet.”
Crystal has been living between Australian and Ireland most of her life.
She returned to Australia four years ago to be closer to her family.
