Forbes golfers dominated Sunday’s Lachlan Valley District Golf Association’s Championships and Pennants Day at the Forbes Golf Club last Sunday. Forbes won four of the major individual championships of the eight contested, as well as three of the four team pennants.

In the premier event the 18 hole championship for the Moulder Cup saw Forbes golfer Peter Dawson dominate when he fired a brilliant 3 under par round of 69, winning his first major event by one shot from the event favourite John Betland, also of Forbes.
In his acceptance speech Dawson congratulated his fellow competitors and also paid significant praise on his fellow club members who have been an inspiration especially the Betland brothers John and Steve. Dawson also stated it was an honour to be crowned the district champion and mentioned that the triumph was and is the highlight of his career.
Joining Dawson on the victors stage were Andrew Harland of West Wyalong who recorded a convincing 6 shot victory as he finished on 82, taking the B Grade title for players on handicaps of 11 to 16 inclusive. Forbes golfer Steve Uphill, surviving a countback, finished runner-up, while in C Grade for players on handicaps of 17 plus victory was sweet for another Forbes golfer Terry Sharpe. Terry was equally impressive as he recorded a two shot victory after a great 87 off the stick with fellow club member Stuart French finishing runner-up on 89.
In other championship events Parkes junior Lachlan Buesnell triumphed in that division as he recorded a solid 87 off the stick.
In the Champion of Champions – an event restricted to the relevant club champions – saw Parkes champion Justin Sutton to the fore as he shot a 72 off the stick, while Grenfell’s Jono Baker retained his Sand Greens player title after an 84 off the stick.
In the highly competitive veterans section victory went to Forbes golfer Alan Rees who finished on 71 nett, while Dave Mylecharane – also of Forbes – took home the Gordon Moulder Cup as he survived golf’s countback system, returning the day’s best handicap score of 71 nett.
In the minor handicap events, A Grade saw Dave Mylecharane with his 71 victorious with Andrew Dukes runner-up on 72, B Grade victory went to Lawrence O’Connor on 71 one shot ahead of fellow Forbes teammate Peter Barnes on 72, and C Grade Parkes golfer Richard Hamilton was successful on 71 nett, two shots ahead of runner-up Grenfell’s Adam Donnelly.
In the Pennants teams events the A Division Pennant saw Forbes number 1 successful on 197 points with Parkes finishing runner-up on 173. In the highly competitive B Division victory went to the Forbes B2 side who recorded 116 points as they edged out the Parkes B2 team who finished on 115 points.
The Parkes Veterans dominated in that section with the club recording its 19th victory in the past 20 years as the team of Robert Hey, Ian Phipps and Phil Bishop recorded saw 68 points to defeat its number 2 team of Dub Rodgers, Paul Thomas and Peter Boschman by 16 points.
The final Pennant saw the Forbes A1 team make it a double in taking out the Handicap Pennant as the team of John and Steve Betland, Peter Dawson, Andrew Dukes, Daniel Bayley and Peter Nixon recorded a great 210 points, some 14 points clear of runner-ups the Forbes B2 side.
NORTHPARKES MINES CHARITY GOLF DAY
The annual Northparkes Mines Charity Golf Day was held last Saturday and the day proved to be a huge success with the Parkes Branch of Can Assist as the major benefactor. The day saw some 119 players contest the 3 Person Ambrose.
Major winners on the day saw the team of Mitch McGlashan, Ben McNaughton and Dave Chambers record the day’s best scratch score of 11 under par 60 to be clear winners.
In the handicap events the 18 Hale 18 Handicap Award for teams comprising handicapped golfers saw Allan Sharpe, Craig Dillon and Michael Dellaca dominate with a great 58 nett. The ladies team event went to Lesley Fisher, Colleen Staples and Glynis Conroy on 68 nett, while Toby Webb, Sam White and Aaron Buesnell with 60 5/6 nett took out the event restricted to teams comprising a mixture of handicapped and non-handicapped players.
In the novelty events saw wins to Troy Thomson, Kaye Jones and Toby Webb in Long Drive competitions. Nearest the Pin awards went to Richard Hamilton at 391cms on the 1st Hole, Steve Edmonds at 19cms on the 4th Hole, Ian Ward at 465cms at the 6th Hole, Denis Howard on the 11th Hole at 277cms and on the 15th Hole Ben McNaughton at 329cms in the men’s. In the ladies Janelle Thompson took out the 4th Hole at 150cms, Colleen Staples at 600cms on the 6th Hole, Frankie Cock at 800cms on the 11th Hole and on the final Par 3 the tough 15th Hole saw Margaret Hogan successful at 484cms.
Organisers of the day Michael Woods and Brad Monkerud both thanked all players for their patronage as well as the numerous sponsors. They also made special mention of the work put in by the event’s beneficiaries the Parkes branch of Can Assist who prepared and provided the day’s sausage and steak sandwiches.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The annual members Terry Bros Furniture and Floorcoverings sponsored Club Championships will commence this weekend with the 1st and 2nd rounds to be played on Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30. The final two rounds will be contested the following weekend.
Members are urged to nominate on the time sheets which are now available in the clubhouse and players are reminded that they can nominate with whoever they wish to play during the initial three rounds. A draw will be done for the final round with the leading players all grouped together.
The club’s Matchplay Championships qualification will be done from the 3rd round of the championships and it will be the leading eight players in each of the three grades who qualify.
THIS WEEK’S GOLF
Today being Anzac Day, the men and ladies will contest an 18 Hole Medley Stableford for a Club donated trophy.
Tomorrow Wednesday the ladies will play an 18 Hole Stableford for Lynne Guise’s trophy, while the men will play their customary 9 Hole Stableford (Chicken Run) competition.
Then on the weekend the men will contest the opening two rounds of their annual Championships with Terry Bros Furniture & Floorcoverings as the sponsors while on Saturday the ladies will play an 18 Hole Stableford for Cath Kelly’s trophy.
Finally to all members with the days becoming shorter, the cut off time for the return of scorecards has been changed to 5.30pm for all Saturday competitions.
Resident Professional Daniel Newton will also conduct an 18 hole Stableford event through the week with the winner to receive a trophy from the Pro Shop.
There will also will be a ball competition in conjunction and players can play any day from Sunday through to Friday, with scorecards to be handed in by 5.30pm on a Friday.
