Men’s Bowling
Pennants: The number 2s who were section winners recently will be playing for the district championship in Narromine on May 27.
Easter mini carnival: On Easter Monday eight teams of four played off for total prize money of $1000 partly sponsored by Rob and Joyce Irving and for this we thank them greatly. The winners were Arthur Corbett, Les Kent, Rob Irving (who kindly redonated his winnings) and Ron Hornery with five wins and a margin of +36. Second- Col Hayward, Gwenda Carty, Francis Charlton and John Hodge. Third – Nathan Wills, Greg Howlett, Gordon Dickson and Joan Simpson. Fourth – Dave Johnson, John Taylor, Brenda Davies and Cherie Frame. We thank these and all other teams for their participation.
Social bowls April 20: Six games of pairs were played with most games being won by convincing margins. The two Joe’s- Crowley and Davies won 26 to 16 over Colin Mudie and Ron Fisher in what one described as a serious game. Warren Bevan and Ray Jones defeated Col Hayward and John Carr 24-16. Warren showed a lot of interest in the wrong biases next door but still went out to a 20 to 8 lead. Ron Hornery and Les Kent won 30–15 even with fair total of wrong biases. Greg Howlett and John Dunn played some really tight ends to wear down the Johns, Watson and Hodge 19–11. Gordon Dickson, “master of the stick” continued his great form from Monday with Rob Irving to beat Mike Valentine and George Bradley 23–12. Steve Ryan and Gladryn Sun had a comfortable win over John Ward and Bernie Mitchell 21–12. Fancy the scribe being down five and drawing the shot. The prize winners were Ron Hornery and Les Kent. Winners and Runners up Rob Irving and Gordon Dickson. All received prize money on Monday.
District pairs at Peak Hill April 21: Gary Carberry and Tom Furey were along with Bruce Orr and Colin Mudie our reps in the Open Pairs along with 2 other teams. Bruce and Colin were defeated in their game by Lee Hetherington and Shane Sharman from the Railway while Tom and Gary won their first game narrowly and reached the final to play Lee and Shane. They had a narrow win 17–16 in a highly contested match to become District Champions. A first title for Gary. Well done! Steve Ryan and Col Hayward, Rob Irving and Wally Grant along with Bernie Mitchell and Steve Mills played in the senior pairs. They all won their first games on Saturday. Steve and Col played the Forbes team of Mike Connely and Brian Tisdell on Sunday morning while the other two played off against one another for a place in the final. Steve and Col won their game 17–16 and Bernie and Steve Mills won their game. Therefore Steve and Col played them in the final. The final score in the final was Steve and Col winning 27–16 and becoming district champions. Congratulations.
Social bowls April 22: 14 bowlers comprising two pairs matches and one triples plus a minor singles match were played. In the minor singles match they played 34 ends with Gary McPhee leading 29–24 at one stage only to be run down by Wilbur Harris 32–30. There must have been some fairly tense moments towards the end. In the triples match John Ward, Chris Dunn and Jim Blake 36 were too good for Ray Jones, John Watson and Bob Freeman 10. In the pairs John Dunn and Joe Crowley w,ere defeated by Ron Hornery and Gordon Dickson 22–18 and finally Les Kent and Greg Huggins were victorious over George Boatswain and Gladryn Sun 31–19. Prize winners on Saturday featured Les Kent again, this time with Greg Huggins.
