An excellent field contested last Saturday’s Owen Crowley and the Corner Boys sponsored 18 Hole Stableford event at the Parkes Golf Club Course and solid scoring was certainly the order on a day that also saw members contesting the Terry Sheridan Memorial Trophy.
Prior to the presentation of trophies Club Captain Paul Thomas praised the sponsors for their commitment and wonderful sponsorship as well as that given to the club by the Sheridan Family for its ongoing support which is highlighted each year when the families matriarch and the three generations descend on the Golf Club to remember their beloved and highly respected husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather the late Terry Sheridan who passed away after a long battle with cancer some three years ago.
Thomas in introducing both Owen Crowley on behalf of the sponsors and the Sheridan family matriarch Kim Sheridan thanked them on behalf of all members.
Both Crowley and Kim Sheridan thanked and congratulated the club for allowing them the privilege of honouring the late Terry Sheridan prior to announcing Lindsay Elliott as this year’s recipient of the major award after he returned a solid 41 points.
Ball winners on the day went to 40 Dave Whitfield, 39 Col Barker & Tony “Scrubba” Evans, 38 Ian Hendry, 37 Brian L. Hogan, Robert Hey & Jake Hodge, 36 Charlie Allen, Wayne Tucker, Tim Burke, Ron Hetherington and Matt Lawryk and surviving the countback on 35 points was Tom Casey.
In the Nearest the Pin awards all players failed to land on the green on the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st Hole, Phil Bishop recorded an easy birdie two after he finished 270cms away on the Griffins Leading Edge sponsored 4th Hole and the shot proved beneficial as it allowed him to take home the Money Hole award as well, Mark Kelly’s short game was to the fore on the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th Hole as his 5 iron finished some 432cms from the pin while Tim Burke hit a solid 7 iron to finish just 371cms away on the Harvey Norman sponsored 11th Hole and on the final Par 3 the difficult Westlime sponsored 15th Hole saw Brian L. Hogan record an easy par after his Tee shot came to rest some 625cms from the pin.
The day’s final two award the Nearest the Pins in two shots on the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th Hole and the PJL Groups 18th holes saw Brian L. Hogan victorious at 870cms on the 9th Hole while Tim Burke playing in one of the last groups of the day managed a victory after he hit a superb Sand Wedge to just 10cms on the course’s 18th Hole.
VALE COLIN “SNOW” WATTS
The club lost one of real characters when it was learnt of the sad passing of Colin “Snow” Watts in the early hours of Sunday morning. Despite being a resident of the Rosedurnate Nursing Home for the past 4 years Watts will long be remembered as a great servant of the club and he was often found volunteering his services to the clubs Greens Staff and to the Veterans Tuesday morning working bees.
Watts had only recently celebrated his 89th birthday on Friday, March 11 was a man of many trades and was liked by all persons who he had encountered during his colourful life.
Funeral arrangements for the late Colin “Snow” Watts will take place this Wednesday at his home town of Trundle.
Last Saturday the ladies contested an 18 Hole 4Ball versus Par event which also acted as the qualifying round of the Golf NSW / Keno NSW 4Ball Handicap Championship and leading home the field were sisters Kaye Jones and Lynne Guise who recorded a solid and impressive +8 score line to run out comfortable 5 shot victors. Runners Up were the Judy McCabe and Leone Stevenson pairing on +3 with Denise Charlton and Lesley Fisher in the minor placing on +2 just 1 shot ahead of Sue Holman and Anita Medcalf. In the Individual competition that was conducted in conjunction saw Kaye Jones victorious on +2.
In Nearest the Pin awards Colleen Flynn took out the Lyn Rogan sponsored 1st Hole, Judy McCabe the Parkes Pharmacy 4th Hole, while on the Telescope Tyres & Batteries 6th Cathy Kelly received the accolades while Anita Medcalf and Margaret Hogan were worthy winners of the Parkes Services Club sponsored 11th Hole and the Railway Hotel 15th Holes respectively.
Congratulations to the Mudgee Golf Club upon its victories in both the Division 1 & 2 Pennants finals at the Orange Ex-Services Club on Sunday.
In the Division 2 final between Parkes and Mudgee the contest went right down to the wire with matches square at 2 all after victories by Phil Barnard and Denis Howard it appeared all dome and gloom for the Parkes team as with 2 holes left to play Parkes’s No 1 Tim Burke was 2 down but like all true stayers he recorded breathtaking victories on the final two holes to force the match into a sudden death situation and unfortunately in a match that see-sawed from the start to finish the match didn’t deserve to see either player go down, however the Mudgee team rallied to take the match 3 and 2 in a nail biting finish.
Despite the loss Parkes team Captain and Manager Denis Howard was extremely proud of his team.
In the Division 4 Final between Forbes and Cowra, Forbes came home victorious.
