WHEN DACEY ROAD THE MULE …
This Paterson poem may not be well known but to the people of Illalong NSW the story of one of their residents still brings a smile.
In brief the story tells of young Dacey who rode a mule in the ring at a local circus to win what everyone thought was a cash prize of a ‘crown’. When the prize turned out to be a brown paper crown placed on his head, young Dacey sought revenge. He let out some of the circus animals including, all the monkeys, to roam free into the bush.
Young Dacey then went on to be a successful rodeo rider and jockey, then racehorse trainer. Upon semi-retirement the no longer “young” Dacey became the licensee of the Wombat Hotel just out of Young.
The Wombat Hotel still retains its affiliation with Bush Poetry and several members of the Wombat Bush Poets will be leading the poetry and storytelling.
The Reserve Bank has chosen the Yeoval museum as the place to showcase this new note to the residents of Central Western NSW. Bank representatives will attend the open day.
