The Jack Scoble Scholarship offers local students the chance to receive up to $2000, and is supported by the Parkes Shire Council and local community groups.
The scholarship is open to students who completed the Higher School Certificate in 2015 or 2016 at a school within the Parkes Shire and are undertaking their first year of full-time university studies this year.
Manager Cultural, Education & Libraries Services, Shellie Buckle said the late Mr Scoble OAM was Mayor of Parkes from 1966 to 1979.
“This scholarship is offered as a meaningful way to recognise the quality and longevity of his services to the Parkes community,” Shellie said.
“Getting an extra financial boost can make tertiary education more accessible for regional young people.”
2016 scholarship recipient, Brooke Carpenter is studying Bachelor of Education (K-12) and hopes once finished this degree to continue on and complete a graduate diploma in psychology.
“The money from the scholarship has been very helpful in my first year,” Brooke said.
“It has helped me with the expenses of living on campus and purchasing a laptop for my studies.
“I would like to thank the scholarship committee at Parkes Shire Council. It has been an invaluable contribution to my studies that I am very grateful for.”
