National cancer charity, Redkite, has predicted a more than 20 per cent increase in demand for financial assistance among cancer patients across New South Wales in December as families continue to feel the pressure of growing travel costs and living expenses during the holiday season.
Selinder Hockings (Coles Parkes) said the charity is very important for children and young people affected by cancer.
“Redkite raises much need funds to assist families with accommodation, travel and food expenses,” she said.
“From now until December 27, Parkes shoppers can buy a $2 Redkite donation card at Coles which helps provide financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families.
Coles Parkes are also holding their very popular Santa photos again this year, another fundraising endeavour for Redkite.
“Every Friday from 2pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm kids can come in store and have their photo taken with Santa for a cost of $5,” she said.
“Coles Parkes donates their time and staff to organising the Santa photos with every cent of the $5 going to Redkite.
Selinder said Santa has a special treat for local children this Christmas.
“If they would like to bring their dogs along to meet Santa, he will pop out the front of the store and get a photo with them and their beloved fur babies.”
Santa photos are available at Coles every Friday and Saturday until Christmas.
Redkite General Manager Marketing and Fundraising, Monique Keighery, said the charity is seeing unprecedented demand for assistance from families facing their child’s cancer
"For many families, the Christmas period can be a really challenging time.
Some families will get the devastating news that their child has cancer and hundreds of children will be undergoing treatment or facing cancer’s impacts.
We know from previous years that demand for Redkite's support, including financial help and counselling sessions, increases at this time.
“By buying a $2 donation card at Coles supermarket counters this festive season, shoppers can help children and young people with cancer and their families when they need it most."
Coles State General Manager Thinus Keeve encouraged local shoppers to help support sick kids and their families this Christmas.
“Cancer touches the hearts of so many of our customers and team members so we want to give locals the opportunity to show their support for families in need. Every dollar makes a difference to the support they receive,” he said.
